This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:
EVIDENCE OF VERTICAL MOVEMENT ASSOCIATED WITH PREVIOUSLY IDENTIFIED FAULT Investigation into a geologic fault suspected to be of pre-glacial origin which was discovered during axcavation for plant cooling towers has resulted in evidence of post-glacial, upward movement of the overlying soil. The initial discovery of the suspected pre-glacial movement had been reported to NRC in late October 1976 and is under evaluation by NRR.
The licensee is conducting further investigation of this new information because of its significance with respect to the initial indications.
Media interest is expected because of nuclear plant interest in New York State and current interest in the seismology of this area. The State of New York has been and is being kept informed. A press release is not planned at this time.
