NOV t 0 El Honorable hussell E. Train Chairman, Council on Environmental Quality 722 Jackson Place, N.W.
Washington, D. C.
20006
Dear Mr. Train:
Chairman Schlesinger has asked me to recpond to your letter of nue,ter 3,1972, regarding the Newbold Island Nuclear sencrating Station and the Limerick Generating Station.
The Corc;ission's regulatory staff is in the process of im-piementing the AEC's statutory responsibility of reviesing the pending construction peytiit applications for the two plants in question. He have had under continuous review the question of water availability in these proceedings.
The staff has recognized the significarace of this question and
, earlier concluded that completion of. the environmental and safety review of these applications r2 quires further clari-fication of the matter of water availability.
While we will soon be issuing the required draft environ.
mental impact statements and soliciting and evaluating conaents thereon, we have advised the applicants that we will not be in a position to establissi a final staff position from either an environmental or safety standpoint until the water availability quest 19n has received further clarification.
. A copy of your letter of November 3 and this reply are being plac#d in the Commission's Public Document Room.
Sincerely.
G
