December 6, 1978 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION.0F EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-78-204 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

FACILITY: Arkansas Power and Light Company Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit 2 Russellville, Arkansas DN 50-368

SUBJECT:

INITIAL CRITICALITY 1

The Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit 2, attained initia'l criticality at 2:55 p.m.

on December 5, 1978. Rod positions and boron concentration at initial criticality were in very close agreement with predicted values. Initial criticality was witnessed by NRC Region IV inspectors.

the NRC Resident Inspector on December 5,1978. The licensee plans to issue a press release.
