1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 PURPOSE 1.1.1 The purpose of this construction procedure is to describe the functions and responsibilities of the DCC Microfilm Group at CPSES in the filming and conversion of drawings to 35mm aper-ture card microfilm.

1.2 SCOPE 1.2.1 This procedure establishes the methods employed by the DCC Microfilm Group in the drawing microfilm system and the in-spection of processed 35 mm aperture cards.

2.0 PREPARATION OF DRAWINGS FOR MICR0 FILMING l

2.1 Upon receipt of drawings, the Microfilm Group will review each drawing for general overall quality and suitability for micro-filming. After completion of the verification and quality re-view, the drawings will be filmed in accordance with Section 3.0.

05/11/81 2 of 3 3.0 MICR0 FILMING OF DRAWINGS AND COMPLETION OF APERTURE CARDS 3.1 Drawings to be microfilmed will first be sized and arranged for filming based on the following reduction ratios:

DRAWING SIZE REDUCTION RATIOS Not more thaa 18" wide and not 16X (16:1) more than 24" long (A thru C size typical) l More than 18" wide and more than 24X (24:1) 24" long, but not more than 24" wide and not more than 36" long (D size typical)

More than 24" wide or more than 30X (30:1) 36" long (E size typical)

When the sizing operation is completed, each drawing will be filmed by centering it on the filming copyboard and an exposure will be made. The camera will automatically process and deliver a 35mm camera card in the receiving tray. After each drawing is filmed the original of the drawing will be stamped with a small "m" adjacent to the revision symbol (or in another conspicuous area on the drawing) to signify that the drawing has been filmed.

4.0 INSPECTION AND TESTING 4.1 MICROFILM GROUP INSPECTION 4.1.1 The Microfilm Group wil1 perform microfilm inspection to assure that archival quality microfilm is produced and to assure that microfilm equipment is producing film of sufficient density and line resolution for subsequent reproduction.

4.2 MICROFILM GROUP TESTING 4.2.1 The archival quality of the microfilm will be determined by performing a Methylene Blue Test. This test will be conducted once weekly (0.7 micrograms of thiosulfate per square centi-meter of microfilm is the maximum level that can still be considered to be archival quality).

This test to be performed using the procedures described in the September 1982 revision of the Micro "D" International Bulletin, maintained by the DCC Supervisor. -

4.2.2 Microfilm line resolution will be determined by filming a micro-film target containing a series of National Bureau of Standards 1010 Resolution Test Patterns. The processed camera card containing the target image will then be examined through a 100X power microscope to assure that line direction is resolved at each reduction ratio in accordance with the following values:

SMALLEST NBS 1010 TEST PATTERN REDUCTION RATIO TO BE RESOLVED 16X (16:1) 7.1 24X (24:1) 5.0 30X (30:1) 4.5 This line resolution test will be performed on<,3 daily.

4.2.3 Microfilm density will be determined on a densitometer by digital readout of document background density on camera cards containing drawing images with a desired density range of 1.0 to 1.2 but due to varying background of the drawings being filmed may be increased or decreased in range based on camera card ability to reproduce the best hard copy reproduction. The density test will be performed once daily.

NOTE: Due to the extent of changes in issuing Revision 2, change bars normally a,pearing in the right margin have been omitted.
