Mr. D. Muller, Project Director
BWR Project Directorate No. 2 Division of Boiling Water Reactor Licensing U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555 NRC DOCKET 50-321 OPERATING LICENSE DPR-57 EDWIN I. HATCH NUCLEAR PLANT UNIT 1 HYDROGEN WATER CHEMISTRY TESTING UNDER PROVISIONS OF TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS AMENDMENT 125 i

Gentlemen:

Georgia Power Company's (GPC) letter of March 7, 1986 requested approval of- an amendment to the Plant Hatch Unit 1 Technical Specifications which would allow performance of test injections of hydrogen into primary reactor - coolant. GPC's letter of April 22, 1986 provided additional information in regard to the test injection procedures and associated dose control measures. NRC approved the requested Technical Specification changes as Amendment 125 to Operating License DPR-57, dated May 21, 1986.

Some hydrogen injection testing was performed during July 1986.

However, results of this test indicated the need to continue the testing in order to meet test objectives. Additional testing will be performed as early as November 1986. Further changes to ' Amendment 125 or to the rest of the Unit 1 Technical Specifications are not required in order to support such testing. However, NRC (George Rivenbark) has verbally requested that GPC provide the following infomation:

Measures and procedures outlined in GPC's submittals of March 7, 1986, and April 22, 1986 for performance of hydrogen injection testing will be followed. This includes implementation of dose control measures and appropriate controls for use of hydrogen onsite. The additional testing involves essentially the same equipment and test sequence as before.
