-The device' consists of a depleted uranium shield'and polyurethane fill ~r' enclosed inta 1/4" (6.35 cm) steel-housing.
The steel-e housing:is.a right circular cylinder 13" (33.02 cm) long and 16"
'e (40.64 cm) welded;to the cylinder.
A zircaloy or titanium S-tube extends through the uranium shield and terminates in-the outlet
.nippleLon one end and-the lockbox on the other.
.The source is secured in the shielded condition by positioning the locking ball on the pigtail. assembly between a lock insert
-and the lock plunger.
The insert prevents removal of the source
>through the back of the unit in either the locked or unlocked position. -The lock plunger is slotted to fit over the source cable..
AllEGammatrons manufactured after May 1, 1978 are provided with a guard ring and reinforcing gusset around the lockbox to prevent any direct ~ impact upon the lockbox assembly.
Existing Gammatrons
-may be retrofitted with this reinforcing gusset.
The outlet nipple is a brass fitting' designed to facilitate the use of a snap-on quick disconnect-connect sourcetube.
A lockbon safety cap and safety plug are provided.
The. device:is mounted on wheels to allow easy movement.
The axle and-supporting boss for the two (2)E8" (20.32 cm) welded to the device endpieces.
The!overall dimensions of the device are approximately 21" (53.34:cm) long, 23" (58.42 cm) wide and 42" (1.07 m) high.
The
< gross; weight of the device lbs 500 lb. (226.8 kg) and it contains l
350.lb.-(159 kg) of depleted uranium.

Radiographic Exposure Device DESCRIPTION (Cont'd):
be depressed only when the source assembly is in the shielded position.
These two units utilize either the Gamma Industries source Models A-8-A or A-8-G.
LABELING:
The device bears the manufacturer's nameplate which specifies the model of the device, device serial number, the capacity, the isotope, the source serial number, source model number, activity j
and calibration date.
Also included on the name plate is the address of the manufacturer and the fact that the device contains approximately 350 lb. (159 kg).of depleted uranium.
'The devices are labeled with two (2) " Danger, Radioactive Material" signs which bear the radiation caution symbol and instructions to notify the manufacturer or civil authorities if found.
In addition to the above, when used as a shipping container, the device will be labeled with DOT Yellow III label and a nameplate which states, " GAMMA INDUSTRIES, BATON ROUGE, LA. USA, RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS, SPECIAL FORM N.O.S.,
(COBALT-60) Gross Weight TYPE B USA /9128/B( )."
CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:
The source is normally controlled with a mechanical crankout assembly which enables the operator to move the source between the shielded position and the designated location for an i
exposure.
Crankout assemblies and sourcetubes in varying lengths l
can be supplied by the manufacturer.
The manufacturer also provides detailed operating and maintenance procedures.
EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:
Utilizing 110 Ci (4.07 TBq) of Co-60, the following exposure rates were obtained with a G-M detector calibrated with Co-60.

80 LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:
- The manufacturer furnishes operating and maintenance instructions for the device.
Licensees should provide a copy of these instructions for inclusion in the company's Operating and Emergency Procedures.
. The license should provide for the 350 lb. (199 kg) of depleted uranium used as shielding material and make provisions for the appropriate source as specified below:
Gammatron 100 or Gammatron 200 -
Gamma Industries source Model A-5-A or A-5-G.
Gammatron 100A or Gammatron 200A - Gamma Industries source Model A-8-A or A-8-G.
. Gamma Industries has received a certificate of compliance from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for all Gamma Industries Model Gammatron 100, 100A, 200 and 200A l
manufactured after May 1, 1978, permitting these devices to be used as Type B shipping containers.
The certificate of compliance also includes all Gammatrons manufactured prior to May 1, 1978, provided the guard ring and lockbox reinforcing gusset has been added, but if not, the device must be shipped in a DOT specification 20WC-1 wooden protective jacket.

SUMMARY
The ModelsLGammatron 100,'100A, 200,. and,200A. devices are no longer manufacturedfor distributed by Gamma Industries,.Inc. and Gamma Industries, Inc..is no'longerfin, business.
Therefore, the registration certificate'is being converted to.'an inactive registration' certificate..
The_ devices were originally" approved.for licensing purposes by j
the1 Louisiana Division of. Radiation Control., NRC attempted to i
- obtain copies of all information submitted by the registrant in j
isupport of the evaluation However',. NRC could not locate all the information.
Therefore,~no'sdfaty evaluation ~of the devices was performed as part of the conversion of.the' certificate to l
