DESCRIPTION:

The Gamma Industries Model "A" series source assemblies are designed for use in Gamma Industries, Source Production and Equipment Company, and Gulf Nuclear exposure devices, as shown in the attached pigtail selection chart (Limitations and/or Other Considerations of Use section). The first character in the source model designation indicates that the source assemblies are designed for use in these exposure devices. The second character is a code for the dimensions of the source assembly. The third (last) character in the source model designates the type of connector. "A" indicates the Gamma Industries long Saf-T-Key connector, "R" indicates the Radionics connector, "G" indicates the Gamma Industries short Saf-T-Key connector, "C" indicates the

. Tech-Ops connector, "T" indicates the Budd (clevis) connector and "TG" indicates a modified Tech-Ops connector.

Iridium sources have a single encapsulation, while the Ytterbium

.and Cobalt sources have double encapsulation. Single encapsulation may use either an end-cap or side-weld. Double encapsulation will use only an end-cap weld, and all encapsulation is accomplished using a heliarc (TIG) welding technique. Cobalt and iridium sources are encapsulated in either Type 304 or 316 stainless steel, and Ytterbium sources are encapsulated in Type 7075 aluminum. Capsule wall thickness is maintained at a minimum of 0.030" (0.76 mm). The connector, locking ball, and source capsule are crimped to 1/8" (3.18 mm) diameter stainless steel cable. Overall pigtail dimensional tolerance is plus or minus 1/16" (1.59 mm). In the case of the "TG" connector, a threaded sleeve is first crimped to the stainless steel cable and then the connector is crimped to the sleeve.

LABELING:

The source capsules are not large enough to allow direct labeling; however, the exposure device which contains the source capsule is labeled. For additional labeling information, please refer to the particular exposure. device in which the source is to be used.

CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:

.The Gamma Industries Model~"A" series source assemblies are

-designed for use in the Gamma Industries, Source Production and

-Equipment Company, and Gulf-Nuclear industrial' radiography j

exposure devices shown in the pigtail selection chart.

' PROTOTYPE: TESTING:

Thel"A" seriesLsource? assembly consists of'a single or double encapsulated universal' capsule. The manufacturer states that prototype sources"haveLmet the criteria'specified in ANSI

. publication N542-1977' for-the following classifications:

1 Cobalt'and Iridium", -kNSI 77E43515 Ytterbium' ' ANSI 77C43515 This series also'has an IAEA Certificate of Competent-Authority, ,

Special'.-Form, Radioactive MaterialLEncapsulation, Certificate I Number. USA /0166/S Revision 1. Based on prototype test data these

~

-designs are expectedito reta'in containment integrity under 4 accident conditionselikely..t'oloccur during' normal-use or transportation.

~

tQUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL:

In addition toLthe other tests below, the Ytterbium-168 (stable Ytterbium) capsule is subje6ted to a hot water bubble test prior t'o reactor-irradiation and to a' wipe test upon return. Each

-pigtail assembly, except the Ytterbium-168 assembly which is subjected to a 75 lb. (34.02 kg) pull test, is subjected to a l- -180,1b. (81.65 kg) pull test prior to radioactive material l' insertion'and.is subjected to a wipe test after the material is r '

LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

  • ' Series "A" sources shall'be possessed and used by specific

. licensees of the U.S. NRC or Agreement States.

-* ' Series "A" sealed sources shall not be subjected to environmental or other conditions of use which' exceed ANSI classification 77E43515 for Cobalt and Iridium' sources, and' ANSI classification 77C43515 for Ytterbium sources.

  • Series "A" sources shall be leak tested at intervals not'to exceed'six (6) months using techniques approved by the licensing authority and capable of detecting 0.005 microcurie (185 Bq) of removable contamination.
  • -Series "A" source assemblies shall be used only in the following radiographic exposure devices:
  • Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal: To be determined by the licensing authority.
