REGISTRY'OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES.AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF SEALED SOURCE NO.: 'NR-300-S-878-S DATE: OCT 21 1998 PAGE 2 OF 4 MEALED' SOURCE' TYPE: ' Picker Model T/O 571 Calibration Unit Source Assembly DESCRIPTION:
'The Gamma industries Model TC-1 is designed for use in the Picker-
~
Model.-T/O 571 calibration unit.
The-Cesium source is~a Gamma Industries, Model VD-HP, which is
- doubly encapsulated. .The Model VD-HP source is placed in one end of'a' stainless steel' rod which~is 5.625 inches-(14.27 cm) long and 0.312 inches (7.92 mm) in diameter. Three inches from the
, source end the diameter is-reduced to 0.250 inches (6.35 mm).
Securing of the VD-HP source in the source assembly'is
. accomplished using a'heliarc welding technique. ,
LABELING:
The i source _ capsules are not large enough to allow direct labeling: .however,.the calibration unit which contains the source capsule is-labeled. For additional labeling information, please refer to the Picker-Model T/O 571 safety evaluation. Gamma Industries will secure a source identification tag over the area on.the existing nameplate where " Isotope" and " Capacity" appear.
The-' identification tag'will-include isotope, activity.and date.
CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:
The-TC-1~ source assembly.is designed for use in the Picker Model T/O 571 calibration unit, used to calibrate portable gamma survey meters.

-QUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL':
Each VD-HP assembly is.subjecte'd to a wipeltest after the material is sealed'in the capsule. If the results of the wipe. ,
tests are doubtful, then a hot water bubble : test is performed.
No source will be shipped if' removal contamination exceeds 0.005 microcurie (185 Bq)'. A decay chart and source tag are i supplied with each source, providinglinformation concerning'the activity an'd leak test:results. 1 1
l LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE: .
- Model TC-1 source ~ assemblies shall be possessed'and used by j specific licensees of theLU.S.:NRC or: Agreement States.
e 'Model TC-1 source assemblies shall not be subjected to environmental or other conditions of-use which exceed ANSI I classification 77E43515.
- Model TC-1 source assemblies'shall be leak tested at
-intervals not to-exceed six-(6) months using techniques approved by the licensing authority and capable of detecting 0.005 microcurie (185.Bq) of~ removable contamination.
- 'The Picker Model T/O 571 calibration unit shall be transferred to Gamma Industries for' loading of the Model TC-1 source assembly.
- Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal: To be
-determined by'the licensing authority. -l

SUMMARY
The Model TC-1 source is no longer manufactured or distributed by
' Gamma Industries, Inc. and Gamma Industries, Inc. is no longer in
- business. Therefore, the registration certificate is being converted to an' inactive registration certificate.
I The source was originally approved for licensing purposes by the l Louisiana Division of Radiation Control. NRC. attempted to obtain copies of all information submitted by the registrant in support of the evaluation. However, NRC could not locate all the {
information. Therefore, no safety.~ evaluation of the source was performed as part of-the conversion of the certificate to l
. inactive status. ]
