DEVICE TYPE: Locating-Device l DESCRIPTION:
The device is composed of: (1) a tungsten shield, approximately 2-1/2";(6.35 cm) in. diameter and 3-1/3" (8.47 cm) long; (2) a brass lock holder, approximately 2-1/2" (6.35 cm) in diameter and 1-1/2" (3.81 cm) long, which is secured to the tungsten shield with two machine screws; (3) a lock plunger.with a key lock; and !
(4);a 1/2" (1.27 cm) diameter source holder, which has'a 1/2" (1.27-cm) long stainless steel tip to house the source'. The stainless steel tip is secured to a-1-3/4" (4.45'cm) long tungsten rod which, in turn, is secured to a 1-3/4" (4.45 cm)
.long brass rod which serves as a handle to position the source.
The entire rod (stainless. steel, tungsten, and brass segments) make up'the source holder. Two notches on the source holder permit' locking-the source in either the exposed or the safe position. A, keyway on the source holder prevents rotation of the source holder while in the safe position'and also serves as a guide when. moving the~ source to the exposed position.
An exposure port is. located at 45 from the lock plunger so that
.it may be unlocked and locked without exposing the. fingers or body to the beam of radiation. To coincide with customer desires, the size of the exposure port angle can vary from 0 to 2,8 .
The overall outside dimensions.of the device are-approximately 2-1/2"-(6.35 cm) in diameter by"4-3/4" (12.07 cm) long.
~
The device is used primarily to locate'an.x-ray crawler, should
.it-become troubled. This is done by scanning the exterior of the
. pipe with a survey meter.
To operate, the device is secured to
~
an'x-ray crawler. To operate the device, the 1ock plunger is released and the source . holder pulled out tcr the farthest extent.
.:The51ock' plunger is:then depressed to the, flush position and
. locked. When the crawler. exits the pipe, the'first operation performed is to unlock the plunger, push in the source holder, and lock the device'in'the. safe position. The device is safe for u handling and storage only when.the. lock' plunger is locked in the
( ~ flush position.'

DESCRIPTION (Cont'd):
JThe" manufacturer furnishes operating and maintenance instructions
.for the device'which may be licensed for a total of 125 mci L(4.63 GBq) of Cs-137. The. licensee should provide a copy of-instructions for the company's operating and emergency procedures to ensure. safe operation ~and handling of the device. The device mayLalso 1 be. licensed for other uses where' beam radiation'is Ldesired,.but'each case should be. judged on its own merit.
LABELING:
.The device bears the manufacturer's label.which specifies the -
E
. isotope-(Cs-137) and capacity (125 mci [4.63 GBq]). .The label L .also specifies the model number, serial number, and source
- -number. The. radiation' caution symbol is. displayed in the' lower E 'left corner-of the label'.
L EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS: l iUtilizing 125 mci (4.63 GBq) of Cs-137, the following dose rates L .were obtainedEwith a calibrated G-M detector while the source was ]
- in shielded positions

SAFETY ANALYSIS
SUMMARY
'The Tattle-Tale Model No. 1 device is no longer manufactured or distributed by Gamma. Industries, Inc. and Gamma Industries, Inc.
.iscno-longer.in business. Therefore, the registration-certificate is being converted to an inactive registration- ,
certificate. I I
.'The' device was originally approved for licensing purposes by the l Louisiana. Division of Radiation Control. NRC attempted to obtain l copies of all information submitted by the registrant in support ofLthe evaluation. However, NRC could not locate all the information. Therefore, no safety evaluation of the device was performed as part of the conversion of the certificate to
' inactive status.
