CONSIDERATION OF EARTHQUAKES IN THE CONTEXT OF EERGENCY PREPAREDNESS i This responds to your February 26,1985 memo to Mr. Shea on the above subject.
requesting information on studies and approaches by other advanced nuclear ,
countries regarding taking earthquakes into consideration in the centext of '
nuclear emergency planning.
As endicated to you over the phone on March 18 by Hans Schechter. IP. we have check 4,d several sources for information but have failed to turn up anything pertinent so far. The checks included querying D0E's Energy Data tank at Oak Ridge. Tennessee, and NRC's computerized data bank at NIN. as well as discussions with MRC staff involved in emergency planning, and staff mas 6ers at Batte11e's Pacific Northwest Laboratories who are tracking nuclear emergency efforts worldwide. White several peop44 have speculated that Japan must surely have taken earthquakes into account in their emergency planning work, no one has seen any specific references on the subject for any country.
To obtain more definitive information on the subject, we have drafted the attached telex which we are sending to our Arran m t coordinators in Japan, the FRG 5 basis, b . Korea. France.
