Dear Mr. Shapar:

We have received a request from a citizen that we investigate a possible failure by the Pacific Gas and Electric Company to disclose to the NRC the existence of the Hosgri geological fault near the company's Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant.

The. citizen alleges that the company knew of'the fault for as long as two years before disclosing its existence to the NRC.

Please have prepared a complete report on thic matter for us as soon as possible, including relevant documents and submissions from the company and actions taken by the Commission.

Please call me at 739-2834 if you have any questions concerning this matter.

I welcome your comments and suggestions concerning the significance of materials in your files and your advice on relevant areas of inquiry.
