Pacific Gas & Electric Company (Diablo Canyon Plant)

Dear Tom:

Our investigation in the referenced matt'er has raised the possibility, although unsubstantiated, thet a meeting or meetings may have been held in late-1972 attended by representatives of the Atomic Energy Commission and/or the United States Geological Survey at which the initial evidence of the "Hosgri Fault" may have been discussed.

I have not seen any suggestion of such a meeting in the documents you earlier forwarded to me; to the contrary, it is my impression that AEC did' ot know of offshore faulting n

within five (5) miles of the pra'nt site until the filing in July, 1973 of the geology data by PG&E in the FSAR.

I would appreciate it if you would ask the knowledgeable staff personnel whether such a meeting or meetings were held, and if they were, what was disclosed as to the Hosgri Fault.

In view of the statute of limitations, I ask you to expedite this matter.

Since this correspondence relates to a pending criminal investigation, I ask you to refrain from inserting it in the public document file.

Sincerely, Assis ant Attorney General Land a N tural esources Division Y

NRC Dockets 50-275, 50-323

Dear Mr. Whitman:

Counsel for the NRC Staff have advised us that the Justice Department is investigating a request from an unnamed citizen concerning our disclosure of the existence of the H.oscri gFt.

On March 8, 1978.we received a copy of a letter to yo-=u=

dated December 12, 1977 from Thomas J. McTiernan, Director of the NRC's Office of Inspector and Auditor, together with a list of documents supplied by.various offices of the NRC.

Although so far as I know we have received no request for information pertinent to your inquiry, it occurred to me that your investi-gation would be assisted by examination of the following two documents, copics of which are enclosed:
