November 11, 1993 Technical Specification TS 3.14.G.2 U S Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attn: Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555 PRAIRIE ISLAND NUCLEAR GENERATING Pl>&T Docket Nos. 50-282 License Nos. DPR-42 50-306 DPR-60 i

Report of Plans for Alternate Provisions for Inocerable Fire Barriers This letter is provided to document our plans for the administrative control of a fire barrier in the trench between the D5/D6 Diesel Generator Building and the outside wall.

In accordance with Section 3.14.G.1 of the Prairie Island Technical Specifications, all penetration fire barriers are required to be operable whenever the equipment they are protecting is required to be operable.

Technical Specification 3.14.G.2 requires that:

If Specification 3.14.G.1 cannot be met within one hour:

a) establish a continuous fire watch on at least one side of the affected penetration (s), or b) verify the OPERABILITY of the fire detectors on at least one side of the inoperable barrier and establish an hourly fire watch.

Restore the inoperable penetration fire barriers to OPERABLE status within l

7 days or submit a special report to the Commission within 30 days outlining the cause of the inoperability and the plans and schedule for restoring the barriers to OPERABLE status.

On October 12, 1993, a trench cover in the DS/D6 Diesel Generator Building was removed to provide access for maintenance work.

This cover serves as a fire l

barrier between the building and the outside wall. This barrier will remain off for approximately two more months while work is completed.

In tha interim, an heurly fire watch has been established, and a temporary seal has been placed in the trench at all boundaries that separate fire areas.
