Special Requirements (continued) i d.

Routine inspections are performed prior to each assembly. Annual inspections are performed prior to assembly, every twelve months, or prior to shipnent, which ever comes later.

e.

Plating defects shall not be cause for rejection of the bolt.

'4.

Preparation Procedure, a.

Remove the cask lid bolts and survey for radioactive contamination with an HP-210 probe.

b.

Decontaminate the bolts to less than 100 cpn beta / gamma and less than 200 dpa alpha smearable.

c.-

A wire brush may be used to clean the bolt threads.

5.' Routine Inspection a.

Visually inspect the bolts for 1)

Obvious damage / defects.

2) Proper identification as indicated by three (3 ) embossed radial marks or "VNC-5" engraved on the bolt head.

,b. -Initial the appropriate item on the " Cask Shipping Checksheet", R-8, for acceptable bolts.

I c.

If the bolts are not acceptable, record the reason for the non-acceptance on the Checksheet, and initial entry.

Routine Inspection (continued) d.

Replace the bolts following Part 7, Replacement Procedure of this procedure.

6.

Annual Inspection a.

Use the " Type B Packaging Maintenance / Inspection Checksheet", R-9 to document the

-inspection.

b.

Visually inspect the bolts for 1)

Proper identification as indicated by three (3) embossed radial marks or "VNC-5" engraved on the bolt head.

2) Obvious wear / damage resulting in greater than 0.025 in. reduction in the bolt shank or thread diameter.

Initial the appropriate item on the Checksheet (R-9) for acceptable bolts.

If the bolt (s) are not _ acceptable, record the reason for non-acceptance on the Checksheet (R-9),'and initial the entry.

Cask Lid Bolts - Steel 7.

Replacement Procedure a.

Monitor dose rate and remove the cask lid and seal gasket.

Place the-cask lid in 3,

a stable configuration away from the immediate work area.

b..

Smear the cask cavity and the gasket sealing area for radioactive contamination.

Decontaminate to less than 10,000 ept. beta / gamma (total area) as determined with'a HP-210 probe.

c.

Obtain replacement bolt (s) f rom Area Supervisor.

d.

Verify the proper A'STM' identification markings on the replacement bolt (t).

Record on Checksheet, R-9.

(e.-

Compare the actual length of the new bolt to the length of the old bolt.

'th e length of the new bolt may be reduced to the old bolt length by machining or grinding.

f.

Discard the f ailed / reject bolt as radioactive waste.

g.

Screw the new bolt into the cask until it bottoms.

h.

Visually verify or measure the clearance between the cask mating surface and the bolt shoulder to determine that it (the clearance) does not exceed the lid thickness.

i. If not visually obvious, the clearance and the lid thickness shall be measured to

+ 1/32".

The clearance shall not be more than the thickness of the cask lid in the area of bolting or the bolte shall be reduced in length by grinding or machining.
