This procedure is applicable to the cask seal gaskets for the following cask models:

Cask Seal Gaskets Replacement activities shall be documented on the " Type'B-Packaging c.

' Maintenance Checksheet", R 9, and recorded in the Cask PM Logbook, d.

All off-site cask shipments must use an approved gasket.

e.

Seal gaskets shall be visually. inspected prior to each use, f.

Seal gaskets on routinely used casks shall be replaced every twelve months or whenever demaged, which ever occurs first-.

g.

Model 8400 container seal gaskets are not safety related components.

h.

Annual inspections for gasket replacement are conducted prior to assembly,.

every twelve months, or prior to shipment, whichever comes later.

4.

Preparation Procedure a.

Monitor the dose rate with an appropriate instrument.

Remove the cask lid using an appropriate lifting device.

b.

Smear the gasket assembly and determine the activity level using an HP 210 probe.

,c.

Decontaminate the gasket as necessary to conduct the inspection without L

respiratory protection.

Gaskets will be decontaminated to <10,000 cpm total area smearable as measured with an HP-210 probe.

d.

If the c,ask was used for short-lived radioisotope products, e.g. Mo 99, recove the seal gasket and transfer it to an approved storage area for

decty, e.

Seal gaskets for the small isotope shipping casks, i.e., 8400, 8400A, may be 6 contaminated using a dishwasher, 5.

Procedure L

a.

Visually inspect the seal gasket for tears, rips, or other major faults that l-could prevent cask sealing.

b.

Simple separation of the silicone seal and support ring may be repaired by application of GE-RTV adhesive, O B88 suranscoes annue navislON 000.

Cask Seal Gaskets c.

Check the gasket service date on the silicone aluminum type gasket and the installation service date in the cask logbook for flat neoprene or silicone rubber gaskets. Gaskets shall be replaced, as a minimum,_at or before 12 month intervals.

d.

Initial the appropriate item on the " Cask Shipping Checksheet", R 8, for acceptable gaskets, If the gasket is not acceptable, record the reason for the non acceptance on e.

the Checksheet and initial the entry, f.

Replace the failed gacket following Part 6 Reolacement Procedure.

6.

Renlacement Procedure a.

Discard the out of-service or failed gasket as radioactive waste.

b.

Document replacement activities on the " Type B Packaging Mainte.=nce Checksheet", R-9.

Obtain replacement cask seal-gasket from the Area Supervisor.

c.

New gaskets must be identified with the fiscal week and year of installation-to provide mechanism to determine length of service.

1) Aluminum ring gaskets:

fiscal week - year of installation (39 80) will be vibro etched into ring.

2) Standard neoprene or silicone rubber r,askets:

installation service date shall be recorded in the Cask logbook.

Check the gasket while on the cask eurface for proper alignment for holt

holes and cavity opening.

l f.

Cask leak checks will be performed following SOP XVII:I " Cask Cavity Leak Check" on all Models with the exception of the Model 8000 series.
