The responsible Engineer or the Sugrvisor, Supplemental Services, will coor-dinate scheduling the compressor with Facilities.

Record sandblasting activities in the Cask PM logbook.

e.

Sandblasted steel components will rust rapidly if exposed to the elements.

Always make arrangements to store sandblasted items indoors before completing job.

P_recedure a.

.h ar check the item to determine level of radioactive contamination. An R&EP technician should perform this survey.

b.

Transfer item to the Sandblast Room at the HSF.

If item is too large or bulky to fit into the Sandblast Rotrn, build plastic canopy near the doorway.

c.

locate air compressor in an area to provide air hase access to Sandblast Room, d.

Turn on compressor and wait until adequate pressure is in the supply tank (>80 psi) e.

load sand into hopper. load siough sand to do the job.

Sand nust be dry and free flowing, f.

Ibn protective clothing and respiratory equipment. Backup person must be present during operations requirirE respiratory equipment.

g.

Close door to Sandblast Rocrn or close the plastic mnopy.

Sandblast the item.

Always point the sand stream away from you.

1.

Periodically check the radioactive contamination in an area being sandblasted.

When " clean" discontinue the sandblasting.

Shut down compressor and bleed air out of the tank, k.

Remove any excess sand frcrn hopper.

Store in closed bag or other acceptable container.

'lhoroughly survey the " cleaned" item. R&EP technician should perforTn the survey.

Transfer waste sand to plastic bags.

Seal bags usirg tape and transfer to metal container, o.
