Preparation Procedure i

a.

Use a massolin cloth to smear the drain plug area of the cask. Use HP-210 probe to determine activity level, b.

Decontaminate drain plug area to < 10,000 cpn betvganma activity smearable, c.

Use CP-5 or PIC-6 to nonitor the dose rate and remove the cask lid, d.

Store the cask lid away from the immediate work area.

e.

Carefully take smear of the cask cavity and determine activity level with an HP-210 probe.

Decontaaninate the cask cavity to < 10,00 cpn betvganma activity smearable.

Ibutine Inspection l

a.

Renove the drain plug.

b.

Visually inspct the drain plug and cask fitting for obvious wear, corrosion, or damage > 0.025 in. on the threads.

c.

Add sme water to the cask cavity and check the flow out the drain line.

d.

Collect the water in an appropriate size can and discard to a radioactive drain.

Initial the appropriate item on the " Cask Shipping Checksheet", R-8, for e.

acceptable drain plugs.

If the drain plug /line is not acceptable, record the non-acceptance on the checksheet and initial the entry.

g.

Replace the drain plug following Part 6 Replacement Procedure.

6.

Replacement Procedure a.

Renove traces of the previously used thread sealant from 'ae drain plug and the drain line fitting.

b.

Gase the threads on.the drain line fitting with a tap to restore effectiveness, if required.

c.

'Ihoroughly clean the fitting and plug threads of metal ~ chips after the chasing operation.

!d. Decontaminate the drain line to < 10,000 cpn betvganma using standard deo:>n-L tamination techniques, which may include solvents, acid / base solutions, and L

soap and water.

Obtain a replacement drain plug from the Area Supervisor.

Apply teflon tape thread sealant to the drain plug threads.

g.

Tighten the drain plug.
