Routine preshipment and annual Inspections shall be documented on the "Firoshield Checksheet", R-7.
d.
All required maintenance activities, replacement, repair, etc. shall be documented on the " Type B Packaging Maintenance Checksheet", R-9.

- e. " Routine inspections"are perf ormed prior to each shipment. " Annual inspections"are perf ormed every twelve months or prior to shipment, which ever comes later.
4.
Pranaration Procedure s.
Remove the bolts securing the f f reshield to the base.
Store the bolts to prevent loss or damage.
b.
Ralso the f f reshield and survey the cask for radioactive contamination.
Report any contamination to the Area Supervisor f or decontamination requirements.
c.
Remove the f Ireshield and place on,

Remove cask and transf er to the area designated by the Area Supervisor.
e.
Take direct reading of the inside of the protective jocket and absorber tubes using an HP-210 probe.
If these areas are contamination free, work may be perf ormed in uncontrolled area, if contamination is present, consult with Area Supervisor and Nuclear Safety to determine course of i

Wire brush the absorber angles and weld areas on top surf ace plate, if needed.
5.

Ylsually inspect the visible angles for
- 1) Bonds, cracks, flattening
- 2) Required angles are present and attached
- 3) Visually inspect the welds for cracks; 50% must be sound.

If no visible sign of f ailure on the upper angles is Indicated, the absorber angles on the lower plate can be passed as acceptable.
c.
If f ailure of the upper angles is evident, remove the separator plate and visually inspect the lower set of angles per 5.a.
d.
Initial the appropriate item on the "Fireshield Checksheet", R-7, for acceptable angles.
e.
If angle (s) are not acceptable, record the reason for non-acceptance on the j
l Checksheet and initial the entry. Notify the RP&S Analyst /Custodlan and the Area Supervisor of any unacceptable angles.
f.
Forward the R-7 checksheet to the Analyst / Custodian. The " Type B Maint-enance Checksheet", R-9 will be issued by the Analyst /Custodlan to authorize the required work.
g.
Replace the angle (s) following Part 7, Rantaemment Premdure.

c.
Check the welds for soundness by striking the angles in several places on side adjacent to welds with a hammer. Wear ear protection during the testing.
- 1) Strike the angle sharply but not hard enough to damage the angle.
- 2) Yl.sually inspect the welds for cracks; 50% must be sound.
3)
If <50% are sound, extra welds shall be applied approximately one Inch on either side of the unsound weld until the 50% criteria is satisfied.
d.
If the angles on the upper plate are acceptat'., the angles on the lower plate are also acceptable.
i e.
If an angle on the upper plate f alls, remove the separator plate and inspect the lower set of angles per 6.b and 6.c.
f.
Initial the appropriate item on the Checksheet (R-7) for acceptable absorber angles, g.
If angle (s) are not acceptable, record the reason for non-acceptance on the Checksheet (R-7) and initial the entry. Notify the RP&S Analyst / Custodian and the Area Supervisor of any unacceptable angle (s).
h.
Forward the R-7 checksheet to the Analyst / Custodian. The " Type B Maintenance Checksheet", R-9, will be issued by the Analyst / Custodian to authorize the required work.

Replace the angle (s) following Part 7, Rantacament Procedura.
7.
Raniacament Procedure a.
Wlpe clean all angles and carefully survey the angles directly for redloactive contamination using an HP-210 probe.
b.
Contact Nuclear Safety (NS) for assistance in determining protective clothing and respiratory requirements and where work can be perf ormed.

Absorber Angles c.
Use a cold chisel and hammer or abrasive blade grinder to remove the f ailed absorber angles.
Discard as redweste if contaminated.
If not contaminated, discard to scrap metal bin. NS must release angles if discarded as non-radloactive weste.
d.
Obtain replacement angles, drawings, ECN's and/or speelfIcations from the Area Supervisor, e.
Remove the old tack welds using an abrasive grinder, f.
Care shall be taken to avoid cutting or deforming the Jacket well, base plate, or separator plate when removing welds.
g.
Prepare weld area by grinding or sandblasting surf ace to bright shiny j
metal.
Paint shall be removed at least 2 Inches around the weld area.
h.
Tack weld the angles in place on one side using SMM or GMM techniques.
Use a 1/8" tack weld approximately 1/2 inch long for every 3 Inches of angle length on one side of angle only. Tack weld at each end of the angle also.
I.
Remove slag f rom the welds.
J.
Visually Inspect completed welds per the drawings, ECN's, or other applicable documents specified on the R-9 c'<cksheet.
Perform the weld soundness test por Part 6.c.
k.
The Area Supervisor /Enginer must visually inspect the Installation per applicable drawings, ECN's, and/or specifications. Any deviation noted will require the Initiation of a Deviation Report (DR).
8.
Assembly a.
Paint the angle (s) and separator plate f ollowing SOP XVil:L " Metal Fireshield Painting".
b.
Assemble the separator plate and install following $0P XVil:Y, " Separator Plate".
