4.

Preparation Procedure a.

Take smears and direct readings of the fireshield pallet base to determine radioactive contamination level.

b.

Decontaninate to less than 200 cpn betvganrna and less than 100 dpn alpha

(

contamination (direct reading and total surface smear).

c.

Use wire brush to clean dirt out of threads.

5.

Visually inspect the threads for excessive wear, galling, or other damage, b.

Use approprhte size tap to chase the threads.

i c.

Actual insertion of a jacket bolt in the nut freely is the acceptance test.

Initial the appropriate iron on the "Firehield Checksheet", R-7, for acceptable

nuts, e.

11 nuts are not acceptible, record the reason for the non-acceptance on the CheCKsheet and initial the entry.

f.

Replace the nut (s) follo ting Part 7 Replacement Procedure of this procedure.

6.

Annni Inspection

a. ' Use the " Type B Packaging Maintenance / Inspection Cnecksheet", R-9, to docment the inspection.

b.

Visually inspect the threads for excessive wear, galling, or other damage, c.

Use appropriate size tap to chase tne threads, if required, d.

Use a hammer to test the soundness of the weld on each nut.

e.

Strike each nut sharply, but not hard enough to cause dtmage, in several places.

If the nut is not dislodged, the weld is acceptable, f.

Initial the appropriate item on the Checksheet (R-9) for acceptable nuts, g.

If the nut (s) are not acceptable, record the reason for non-accep*mce on the Cnecksheet (R-9) and initial the entry.

Replace the nut (s) following Part 7 Replacement Procedure of this procedure.

Replacement Procedure a.

Take direct reading of the base nut using an HP-210 probe.

If area is contamination free, work may be performed in uncontrolled area. If area has contamination present, consult with Area Supervisor and R&EP technician to determine course of action.

b.

Remove damaged nut from base using cold chisel and hamer and/or an abrasive blade grinder.

c.

Use care to avoid cutting or deforming the base plate during nut renoval operations, d.

Discard failed nut as radwaste if contaminated or to scrap metal bin if not con-taminated.

e.

Use an abrasive grinder to renove traces of the previous weld.

f.

Renove paint for approximately 1 inen in the weld area and grind surface to bright shiny metal.

g.

Obtain replacement nut (s) fram the Area Supervisor, h.

Verify proper ASD1 grade identification markings are on the repleany.nt nut',s).

Record on Checksheet (R-9).
