W e routine inspections shall be doceented on the "Fireshteld Checksheet", R-7.

We annual inspection and/or replacement activities shall be doceented on the

" Type B Packaging Maintenance / Inspection Checksheet", R-9, and recorded in the Cask PM Iogbook.

d.

Ibutine inspections are performed prior to each assembly. Annual inspections are performed prior to assembly, every twelve nonths, or prior to shipnent, which ever comes later.

4.

Preparation Procedure a.

Renove the bolts securing the ffreshield jacket to the base, b.

Renove the fireshield and place on the ground.

c.

Survey the cask for radioactive containation. Heport any contamination to the Area Supervisor for decontamination requirements, d.

Renove the cask and transfer to the area designated by the Area Supervisor.

e.

Take smears and direct readings of the inside of the protective jacket and absorber tubes. Cbntanination must be < 100 epn betvgansna and < 200 dpn alpha.

f.

Nutine Inspection a.

Visually inspect the separator plate for 1.) Cracks 2.) Serviceability b.

Initial the appropriate item on the "Fireshield Checksheet", R-7, for an accepthble separator plate.

c.

If the separator plate is not acceptable, record the reason for non-acceptance on the Checksheet and initial the entry.

d.

Replace the separator plate following Part 7, Replacement Procedure.

6.

Annual Inspection i

a.

Use the " Type B Packaging Mabtenance/ Inspection Checksheet", R-9, to doement the inspection.

b.

Visually inspect the separator p\\ ate for i

1.) Cracks 2,)

Serviceability 3.) Deformation >1/4 in from true plane.

i c.

Initial the appropriate item on the Checksheet (69) for an acceptable separator i

plate.

l d.

If the separator plate is not acceptable, record t.he reason for non-acceptance on the Checksheet (R-9) and initial the entry.

a.

Take smears and direct reading of the separator plate and datermine containation level using an HP-210.

b.

If any contanination is detected, the separator plate removal cust be performed

(

in a " controlled area" wearing protective clothing or the plate m.3t be decontaninated to < 100 cpn betVgama and 200dpn alpha direct reading.

c.

Renove the failed separator plate by renoving the metal tabs holding the plate in

place, d.

Hansner and chisel and/or abrasive blade grir. ding may be used to renove the welded tabs.

i e.

Care shall be taken to avoid cutting or defoaning the retainer ring or base plate when renoving welds.

f.

If plate is not contaminated, as detecnined by an R&EP technician, discard to

]

scrap metal container. If plate is contaminated, discard to radwaste container.

g.

Obtain the replacement separator plate, absorber angles, drawings, ECN's, and/or specifications from the Area Supervisor.

Paint both sides of the asssably Navy Gray to prevent rusting.

Install the conpleted separator plate in the retainer ring in the pallet.

Absorber Tubes c.

The routine preshipment and annual Inspections shall be documented on the "Fireshleld Checksheet", R-7.

d.

All required maintenance activltles; repairs, replacement, etc. shall be documented on the " Type B Packaging Maintenance Checksheet", R-9.

e.

" Routine Inspections" are performed prior to each shipment.

" Annual Inspections" are perf ormed every twelve months or prior to shipment, whichever comes later.

4 Precaration Procedure a.

Remove the bolts securing the protective Jacket to the base.

Store the bolts to prevent damage or loss.

b.

Ralso the fireshield and survey the cask for redloactive contamination.

Report any contamination to the Area Supervisor for decontamination requirements.

c.

Remove the fireshleid and place on the ground.

d.

Remove the cask and transf er to the area designated by the Area Supervisor.

e.

Take direct reading of the Inside of the protective Jacket and absorber tubes using an HP-210 probe, if these areas are contamination f ree, work may be performed in uncontrolled area.

If contamination is present, consult with Area Supervisor and Nuclear Safety to determine course of action.

f.

Wire brush the absorber tubes inside the protective Jacket, if needed.

5.

Routine IntneetIon a.

Visually inspect the absorber tubes for:

1) Cracked welds; a alnimum of 50% must be sound.

I

2) Wear >50% of the 0.120" wall thickness over >6 In. of tube length.
3) Crush >50% of original 7/8" diameter over >6 in. of tube length, b.

Initial the appropriate item on the "Fireshield Checksheet", R-7, for acceptable absorber tubes.

If tube (s) are not acceptable, record the reason for non-acceptance on the Checksheet and initial the entry.

Notify the RP&S Analyst / Custodian and Area Supervisor of unacceptable tube (s).

d.

Forward the R-7 checksheet to the Analyst / Custodian.

A " Type B Packaging Maintenance Checksheet", R-9 shall be issued by the Analyst / Custodian to authorize the required work, e.

Replace the tube (s) following Part 7 Raolacement Procedura.

6.

Annual Intnaction a.

Use the "Firoshield Checksheet", R-7, to document the Inspection.

b.

Check each tube f or weld soundness. Strike each tube sharply in several places on the side adjacent to the weld.

Ear protection should be worn during the test.

3 c.

If the tube is not dislodged, the weld is acceptable.

d.

Ylsually inspect the absorber tubes f or:

1) Cracked welds, a minimum of 50% must be sound.
2) Wear >50! of the 0.120" val! thickness over >6 in. of tube length.
3) Crush >50% of original 7/8" diameter over >6 In. of tube length, e.

Initial the appropriate item on the Checksheet (R-7) for acceptable absorber tubes.

f.

If tube (s) are not acceptable, record the reason for non-acceptance on the Checksheet (R-7) and initial the entry.

g.

Replace or repair the tube (s) following Part 7 Raolacement Procedura.

7.

Raolaemment Procedure a.

Wipe clean all tubes and caref ully survey the tubes directly for radioactive contamination using an HP-210 probe.

b.

Contact Nuclear Saf ety (NS) for assistance in determining protective clothing and respiratory requirements and where work can be perf ormed.

Absorber Tubes c.

Remove f ailed tube from Inner Jacket well using a cold chisel and hammer and/or an abrasive blade grinder to cut welds.

d.

Use care to evold cutting or deforming jacket wall during weld removal operations.

e.

Discard old tubes as redweste if contaminated or to scrap metal bin if f ree i

of radioactive contamination. NS must release old tubes f or non-radio-active disposal.

f.

Obtain replacement absorber tubes, drawings, ECN's, and/or specifications from the Area Supervisor.

g.

Remove old tack welds from the Jacket well using an abrasive grinder.

h.

The weld area shall be ground or sandblasted to bright shiny metal.

Paint shall be removed at least 2 in around any weld area.

I.

Tack weld the absorber tube (s) In place using SW or GMAW technique.

J. Use a 1/8" tack weld for epproximately 1/2 in, at approximately every four inches of tube length. Wold to be on one side of tube only.

k.

Use a solid fillet weld across the flattened end of the tube (s).

l.

Remove slag and dress weld on the flattened end with a grinder. This will eliminate steps or shoulder that coald cause problems during assembly.

m.

Visually Ir.spect completed welds por the drawing, ECN's or other applicable documents specif ied on the R-9.

Use a hammer to perf orm the weld soundness test.

n.

Complete the Maintenance Checksheet (R-9).

o.

The Area Supervisor / Engineer must visually inspect the Installation per applicable drawings, ECN's, and/or speelf ications. Any deviation noted will require the initiation of a Deviation Report (DR).
