Dear Sir:

Subject:

Maine Yankee Reactor Cavity Annulus Seal Ring Our letter Reference (c), transmitted to you infernation relative to the reactor cavity annulus seal ring and its potential to becoce a destructive nissile in the event of a loss of coolant accident pipe break inside the reactor cavity.

Subcequent to receipt of your letter Reference (d), we have re-cvaluated the cencerns of the seal ring and determined that due to an oversite in.ur previous review the following information was not included in Refereice (c).

The reactor cavity annulus seal riag at the Maine Yankee Station has never been installed during past plant operatien and is not planncd to be installed during future operation. The seal ring is only installed during plant refuelings. After such refuelings the seal ring is rcrovcd from the cavity annulus and stored for future use.

Thus, in the event et loss of coolant accident pipe break inside the reactor cavity, the cavity seal ring cannot becore a destructive missile.

The Maine Yankee Station has never operated with the cavity seal ring installed and acccrdingly has not itposed a threat to the health and safety of the public.

This information is subnfttcd pursuant to 10CFR50.54 (f). We trust iG 2 067 2VL 7910080
