Acceptance of Grand Gulf Request for Alternative GG-ISI-017 (TAC No. MF2357)

Chris and Jeff, By letter dated June 27, 2013 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML13179A041), Entergy Operations, Inc. (Entergy, the licensee) submitted relief request GG-ISI-017 for the Grand Gulf Nuclear , Unit 1 (GGNS). The proposed request for an alternative to specific portions of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and Pressure Vessel Code (BPV),Section XI, Rules for Inservice Inspection of Nuclear Power Plant Components. Specifically, this proposed alternative requests the use of the Boiling Water Vessel and Internals Project (BWRVIP) guidelines in lieu of specific ASME Code Section XI requirements. The purpose of this letter is to provide the results of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staffs acceptance review of this relief request.

Pursuant to Section10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3)(i), the applicant shall demonstrate that the proposed alternative provides an acceptable level of quality and safety.

The NRC staff has reviewed your application and concluded that it does provide technical information in sufficient detail to enable the NRC staff to proceed with its detailed technical review and make an independent assessment regarding the acceptability of the proposed requests for relief in terms of regulatory requirements and the protection of public health and safety and the environment. If additional information is needed for the NRC staff to complete its technical review, you will be advised by separate correspondence.
