Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Request for Alternative GG-ISI-013 (ME5990)

Christina and Rita, By letter dated April 6, 2011 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML110960459), Entergy Operations, Inc. (Entergy, the licensee) proposed an alternative to American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,Section XI, Subarticle IWB-2500. Specifically, Entergy stated it proposes to utilize the 25% sampling provision of ASME Code Case N-702, Alternative Requirements for Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) Nozzle Inner Radius and Nozzle-to-Shell Welds,Section XI, Division 1, at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (GGNS). This request for alternative is for the third 10-year interval of the GGNS Inservice Inspection Program.

Entergy request the alternative pursuant to Section 50.55a(a)(3)(i) of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR), which states the applicant shall demonstrate that the proposed alternative would provide an acceptable level of quality and safety.

The NRC staff has reviewed your application and concluded that it does provide technical information in sufficient detail to enable the NRC staff to proceed with its detailed technical review and make an independent assessment regarding the acceptability of the proposed requests for relief in terms of regulatory requirements and the protection of public health and safety and the environment. If additional information is needed for the NRC staff to complete its technical review, you will be advised by separate correspondence.
