OF TELEPHONE CONFERENCE CALL HELD ON APRIL 9,2012, BETWEEN THE U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION AND STP NUCLEAR OPERATING COMPANY, CONCERNING REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION PERTAINING TO THE SOUTH TEXAS PROJECT, LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION - SET 17 (TAC NOS. ME4936 AND ME4937)

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) and representatives of STP Nuclear Operating Company held a telephone conference call on April 9, 2012, to discuss and clarify the staff's request for additional information (RAI) concerning the South Texas Project, Units 1 and 2 license renewal application. REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION SOUTH TEXAS PROJECTS, UNITS 1 AND 2 LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION DRAFT RAI B2.1.30-3 April 9, 2012 The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) and representatives of STP Nuclear Operating Company held a telephone conference call on April 9, 2012, to discuss and clarify a request for additional information (RAI) concerning the license renewal application (LRA).

Draft RAI # 82.1.30-1 The staff noted that the applicant has removed certain containment isolation valves from Type B and C testing under 10 CFR Part 50 Appendix J surveillances as a result of an approved exemption received from the NRC based upon a Probabilistic Risk Analysis of risk significance.

It was not clear which aging management programs (AMPs), if any, will be used to manage aging for these components.

Discussion: During the teleconference the staff expressed its concerns regarding the valves and how they would be managed since they appear to be exempted from 10 CFR Part 50 Appendix J testing, and therefore from the applicant's 10 CFR Part 50 Appendix J AMP.

The applicant explained that it intends to manage those components under its Water Chemistry and Inspection of Internal Surfaces in Miscellaneous Piping and Ducting Components programs.

The applicant stated further that the valves in question will be in the pool of eligible components for program sampling as a part of those AMPs.

The applicant agreed to consider issuing a supplemental response to RAI B2.1.30-1 in order to document this position.

The participants agreed that the call was useful in discussing the issues in the RAI.
