Several years ago after taking in a Chilean-Gennan man who had lost his residence;the American Language Academy at Babson College contacted us to board some of their foreign students. Kazu, a Japanese teenager, arrived one evening. I had mixed feelings about this because I had two brothers in World War 2. Kazu turned out to be the sweetest, kindest, most intelligent guest we ever had.

He is our Japanese son., When the disaster struck Japan we could only Email him,all telephone lines were down. Thank you very much for your kindly thoughts" he replied.

"We are o.k." When we finally did talk to him he said that they were 400 kilometers from the Fukushima facility but that they have no electricity and his plants and foundries he oversees are struggling.

We have read "Japan is the most earthquake and tsunami-prepared country on the planet" Many of the sheltered 700,000 refugees from Fukushima have been living on one and one-half rice balls a day. Was this good preparation? We worry about Kazu, his young wife, his young children. We wish we could help our Japanese son.

South of Duxbury lies Plymouth's aging nuclear power plant, it's 40-year old very presence a constant reminder of the potential danger which befell Japan. Entergy says it will drycask 200 or so of the spent fuel rods inadequately stored by 2014. What about the other 3800? Of course it's an expense. Miniscule compared to dealing with a nuclear holocaust - say 488 billion dollars or so (Massachusetts Attorney General' Office). And there are other problems: buried electric cables corroding, leaking radioactive tritium, and fissures in the control rods. Adding to his deterioration of the structure: the chance of human error, the possibility of terrorist acts, Mother Nature's unpredictability. Then there is the destruction ofwildlife: the sucking in of water killing fish larvae, eggs, shellfish and other creatures large and small trapped in screens of intakepipes and into cooling systems. And the hot water exiting the plant impacts the ocean.

In the morning from our kitchen window we can see the rose-breasted nut hatch like a baby torpedo zeroing in on the suet. In late afternoon we see the baby sparrows flapping their tiny wings in the bird bath. It's pastoral. Idyllic. Will they live radiation free? Will they have a future? Will we?
