UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 J u l y 8, 2010 MEMORANDUM TO: Chairman Jaczko Commissioner Svinicki Commissioner Apostolakis Commissioner Magwood Commissioner Ostendorff FROM: Joseph G. Giitter, Director Division of Operating Reactor Licensi Office of Nuclear ~ e a c t o Regulation r

SUBJECT:

NOTIFICATION OF INFORMATION IN THE MATTER OF PILGRIM NUCLEAR POWER STATION In conformance with the Commission's policy on notification to the Commission regarding significant new information, this memorandum provides the following information.

The staff has been notified of elevated tritium levels in one of Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station's (PNPS) monitoring wells located near the condensate storage tank. The latest sample taken on June 21, 2010, returned a test result of 11,072 picocuries per liter. This is below the regulatory reporting requirements and the Environmental Protection Agency drinking water limits. To date, tritium is the only isotope that has been identified in the samples (samples are also tested for hard to detect isotopes such as strontium). PNPS has increased the sampling frequency from quarterly to weekly and has established a formal investigation plan to determine the source of the activity. Although the sample results are below the regulatory reporting requirements, we are providing this information because it may be an issue of public interest. The staff is following this issue closely.

This information will also be served on the parties to the proceeding currently pending before the Atomic Safety Licensing Board.
