RE: Susquehanna ER Attachments:

Susquehanna Aquatic Ecology Information Needs.doc Susquehanna Nquatic Ecology In...

Fred:

I generally found the Susquehanna ER acceptable in regards to its discussion of the aquatic resources; description of the plant cooling water system and its operations; the rationale for not evaluating the effects of the plant cooling water system operations to aquatic biota from entrainment, impingement, and heat shock; and evaluation of the effects of microbiological organisms on public health. Attached is a list of additional information I would like the applicant to provide, including selected references cited in the ER.

I also think you should order at least one copy of the DeLorme Gazetteer for Pennsylvania (you can order directly online from the company).

It would show the transmission lines on it, and I would be able to get a listing of the streams and rivers that the lines cross.

Susquehanna Additional Information Needs Aquatic Ecology and Microbiological Organisms (Public Health)

We need a complete copy of the applicant's current NPDES permit. The ER only has the front page (page F-3 of the ER). We would also need to have a copy of Parts A, B, and C of the permit that actually provide the specific permit requirements.

In addition to the above, copies of the following reports or correspondence cited in the ER are requested:

  • From Chapter 2, Section 2.3:

o Ecology III (1987),

o Ecology 111 (1995), and o

Ecology III (2005) PPL Electric Utilities Corp (2004).

From Chapter 4, Section 4.2 1:

o Ecology 111 (2001) o Ecology III (2002),

o Ecology 111 (2003),

o Ecology I1I (2004), and o

Fields (1982).

It would also be beneficial to have copies of all of the other Annual Reports prior to that published in 1995, those published from 1996 thru 2000, and the most recent one published in 2006 that contain information on the aquatic resources in the Susquehanna area. However, if the annual reports are lengthy documents (e.g., over 100 pages) or are not currently available on CD or electronically, then those besides the ones requested above should be made available to us at the site audit. At that time, I can decide whether it would be necessary to have copies made for us.
