Severe Accident Management Imolementation Schedule i Gentlemen: a Georgia Power Company (GPC) hereby provides notification of the intent to implement the ' 1) industry position on severe accident management at Plant Hatch by July 31,1998. That position, which was provided to the Director of the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulatio~n via the Nuclear Energy Institute's (NEI) letter of November 21,1994 states that:

Each licensee will:

Assess current capabilities to respond to severe accident conditions using Section 5 of NEI 91-04, Revision 1, " Severe Accident Issue Closure Guidelines."

Implement appropriate improvements identified in the assessment, within the .

constraints of existing personnel and hardware, on a schedule to be determined by each licensee and communice.ted to the NRC, but in any event no later than December 31, 1998.

Based on previous interactions between NEI and the NRC staff, we understand that the staff agrees with the need for licensee flexibility in their methods of assessing and establishing severe accident management guidance. Utilizing the associated implementation guidance contained in NEI Report 91-04, Revision 1, GPC expects to complete the assessment of severe accident management capabilities at Plant Hatch'and implement any necessary identified enhancements by the aforementioned date ofJuly 31,1998.
