UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION REGION II 245 PEACHTREE CENTER AVENUE NE, SUITE 1200 ATLANTA, GEORGIA 30303-1257 August 31, 2015 MEMORANDUM TO: Leonard D. Wert, Deputy Regional Administrator

FROM: Frank Ehrhardt, Chief /RA/ Reactor Projects Branch 1 Division of Reactor Projects

SUBJECT:

REPORT ON TRIP TO CATAWBA DATE OF VISIT: August 26-27, 2015 PURPOSE OF VISIT: Quarterly Site Visit per MC 0102 INSPECTOR OBSERVED: Andy Hutto, Jason Parent

SENIOR LICENSEE PERSON CONTACTED: None. OBSERVATIONS:

Both units were operating at 100% power. Unit 2 was preparing to shut down to 18% power to repair a steam leak in the vicinity of a 1/2" sample line isolation valve for the 2C steam generator.

I accompanied Andy and Jason Parent on 8/26 and observed Andy perform portions of IP 71111.13, Maintenance Risk Assessments and Emergent Work Control. Jason arrived on site on 8/24 and is acting as the resident inspector at Catawba while Lundy Pressly is on rotation to Brunswick. Andy verified that the licensee had correctly identified and posted numerous pieces of protected equipment associated with preventive maintenance of the safe shutdown facility. In addition to performing the baseline inspection, Andy used the opportunity to familiarize Jason with the layout of the Catawba site and the location of numerous Catawba safety related systems, their operation, and their design basis. Protected systems/components on both units included safety related service water pumps and valves, emergency diesel generators, 4160V safety related switchgear, component cooling water pumps, charging pumps, and auxiliary feedwater pumps. I observed Andy interact with a number of plant staff members. All communications were open, clear, professional, and in accordance with Agency and Region II standards.

Both the Plant Manager and the Site Vice President were unavailable due to emergent plant issues or off site meetings. I thanked Cecil Fletcher, Regulatory Affairs, for Catawba's support for Commissioner Baran's visit on August 19.
