1984STEAMGENERATOREDDYCURRENTEXAMINATIONSSUMMARYREPORTA.IntroductionDuringtheSpring1984AnnualRefuelingandMaintenanceOutageatGinnaStation,amultifrequencyeddycurrentexaminationwasperformedontubesinbothAandBsteamgenerators.ThepurposeoftheseexaminationswastoaccessanycorrosionormechanicaldamagethatmayhaveoccurredduringtheoperatingcyclesinceApril1983.Particularattentionwasgivenindetectingintergranularattack(IGA)inthetubesheetcrevices;pitting,stresscorrosioncracking(SCC)andwastagebetweenthetubesheetandthefirstsupportplate,dentingandfrettingwearattheantivibrationbartotubeintersectionsintheU-bendregion.TheexaminationwasperformedbyR.G.RE.personnelthathavebeentrainedandqualifiedintheeddycurrentmethodtoatleastaLevelIExaminersCertification.InitialdataanalysiswasperformedbytwopersonnelfromZetec,Inc.ofIssaquah,Washington.DataanalysisandreviewwasalsoperformedbyR.G.RE.andBabcockRWilcoxpersonnelsubsequenttotheZetecpersonnelanalysis.ThedataanalysiswasperformedbybothteamsutilizingZetecDDA-4DigitalDataAnalysisSystem.Resultsofthisexaminationhighlights,onceagain,themajorareaofconcernforfuturesteamgeneratortubedegradationbeingtubesheetcreviceintergranularattack(IGA)andstresscorrosioncracking(SCC).Attachment1givestheSteamGeneratorTubeInspectionandCorrectiveActionHistoryfrom1972throughtheApril1984Outage.B.ProgramAteachinspectionofthesteamgeneratorsaneddycurrentexaminationprogramisgeneratedforeachleg(inletandoutlet)ofbothAandBsteamgenerators.Thephilosophyingeneratingthisprogramistoexamineeverytubeintheinletstoatleastthefirsttubesupportplate,aswellasdoingat,leastthreepercent(3%)overtheU-bendstotheprimaryfaceoftheoutlet.Thenasarandomsampleanexaminationofaselectgroupoftubesupthroughthesixthtubesupportplate.Theprogramfortheoutletsvariessomewhateachyearandincludesthethreepercent(3%)sampleuptotheU-bendtocompletethefulllengthinspectionofthosetubes.Othertubesarealsolookedatupthroughthesixthtubesupportplate.Anassesmentofthesludgepilezoneoftheoutletisperformedbyexaminingtubesupthroughthefirsttubesupportplate.Thespecificprogramforthisyearincluded100%ofallthetubesintheinletsofbothsteamgeneratorsexaminedtoatleastthefirsttubesupportplate.Thefollowingisabreakdownbysteamgeneratorofalltubesexaminedandtotheextenttested.Page2of8 STEAMGENERATORIGAINDICATIONIIISTORYNotSizeable0-25%26-50%51-75%76-100%rA-S/GB-S/GTOTALTOTALMarch19790December19790April1980*19November198020r0(0)(0)(0)(0)21131April1981February1982October1982April1983March198402738(3)92(3)03(1)13(1)150(1)33(1)7(1)41(1)'615240(0)(0)(4)(6)141359'4rg51192~~~Creviceflushingimplemented(31)tubespluggedatthisoutage(28)remainedinserviceandweresleevedduringApril1983Outagewith50otherindications,(1)indicationwasremovedbypulling.()denotesA-S/GtubeindicationsTheseresultsareconsistentwithpastexaminationsoftheAsteamgenerator.However,theBsteam-generatorhasshownamuchlowernumberofIGAandpossibleIGAindicationsincomparisontothepreviousyearsexamination.The8IGAindicationsidentifiedintheBsteamgeneratorbreakdownintothefollowingtwocategories:1.Tubesabovepluggingcriteriagreaterthan40%-3Tubesa.All3tubeswerenewindications2.Tubesbelowpluggingcriterialessthan40%-5tubesa.All5tubeswerenewindications.b.All5tubeswereidentifiedasnotsizeable.Outofthe8indications,all8were'ewindications.TherewerenorecordedindicationsinetubesduringtheSpring1983examination.Page6of8 10 E.ObservationsAswasnotedlastyear,theIGAcontinuestobedevelopingdeeperinthecrevice.AlongwiththeIGAbeingdeeperinthecrevice,mostofthetubesrequiringcorrectiveactionhadstresscorrosioncrack(SCC)indicationsneartherolledtransitionzone.Therewerenoindicationsofpitting,wastageorSCCabovethetopofthesecondaryfaceofthetubesheet.Acomparisonofthedentindicationsbetweenthisinspectionandpastinspectionsrevealedthattherewerenonoticablechangesinnumberoftubeintersectionsorsizeofdents.Allsleevescontinuetoperformwellwithnoindicationsofanydegradation.Onetubehadan85%InsideDiameter(ID)defectintherolledtransitionareaofthetube.Comparisonwiththepreviousyearsdata'showedsomechange.Inreviewingthedatanoothertubeswithsimilarindicationwerefound.Alsoonecoldlegtubehadanapparentwastageindicationatthefirsttubesupportplateintersectionthatexceededthepluggingcriteria.Thistubewassizedutilizingthedifferentialmixwhichallowedformoreaccuratesizingthaninthepast.Severalofthesetypeofindicationshavebeenseeninthepastintheperipheryzoneofthecoldlegandareprobablytheresultofoldphosphatechemistrycontrolresultinginwastage.Thesephenomenaswillcontinuetobemonitoredinfutureinspections.Therewerenoindicationsofanyproblemsassociatedwiththeantivibrationbartotubeintersectionpointsduringthisinspection.Thisisaveryimportantareaofthesteamgeneratorduetoproblemsthathavebeenfoundatotherplants,especiallythosewithModel51steamgenerators.AttheendoftheoutageameetingwasheldtodiscussthenetpositivereductioninnumberofIGAindicationsatthisinspectionascomparedtolastyear',(8to78).Oneofthemostsignificantobservationsduringthemeetingwasthatlastyearsinspectionwasaftertwooutagesin1982wheretherewasanabnormalnumberofdayswiththeBsteamgeneratorindrylay-up.Indrylay-upthetubesheetcrevicescouldbeaffectedbybothoxygenandcarbondioxidepotentiallyraisingthecreviceenvironment'saggressiveness.InordertoallaythisconcernandcontinuetotryimprovingourIGAattackrate,thefollowingitemshavebeenaddressedbytheplantforthe84-85operatingcycle:a)Continueexcellentoperatingsecondarywaterchemistry.b)Creviceflushing.c)Waterlancingofsludge.d)Minimizedrylayuptime.e)Maintainexcellentwetlayupchemistry.f)ConsiderN>orArgonblanketofsteamgeneratorsecondaryforsleevingorwhennotinwetlayup.g)Continuedplantoperationsupport.Page7of8

F.CorrectiveActionCorrectiveActionfortheonetubeintheAsteamgeneratorthathadanareaofIGAapproximately19.6inchesabovethetubeendrequiredthatthetubebeplugged.ACombustionEngineeringMechanicalPlugwasusedforremovingthetubefromservice.Correctiveactionforten(10)tubesintheBsteamgeneratorincludedpluggingone(1)tubeandsleevingnine(9)tubeswithtubesheetsleeves.Thesesleevedtubesarelistedinthe1984CorrectiveActionSummary(Figure5),alongwiththetubesthatwerepluggedinbothsteamgenerators.Alsoincludedinthisyear'smaintenanceactivitywastherepairofthree(3)leakingexplosiveplugsintheAsteamgenerator.ThefollowingtubeswererepairedbyGasTungstenArcWeldinginbareholeplugs:R12C70,R17C60,andR27C48.InpreviousyearsleakingexplosiveplugshavebeenrepairedintheBsteamgenerator,thefollowingarethosetubesthatwererepairedinMay1983:R24C44andinOctober1982R39C68,R39C69andR39C70.Figure6ofthisreport"SteamGeneratorTubeInspectionandCorrectiveActionHistory"givesanoverviewofinspections,results,andactionstakenforallinspectionssince1977.Page8of8
