DPR-42 50-306 DPR-60 l Notification of Delay in Response to Request for Additional Information Related to i Prairie Island Unit 1 Pressurized Thermal Shock Evaluation (TAC Nos. M97850)

By letter dated September 18,1997 the NRC Staff requested additional information i regarding the Prairie Island Unit i reactor vessel surveillance cansule and prussurized thermal shock evaluation. In that letter the NRC Staff requested that wa prwide our response to the request for additional information within 60 days of the date of the

~

letter. Due to factors discussed below, we b e not able to provide the response within the requested 60 days. This letter is provided to inform the NRC Staff that our I response to the September 18,1997 request for additional information will be delayed l until December 5,1997.

l Due to the complex nature of the questions, substantial resources have been applied in lO preparing a response to the request for additional information. Those resources included support from Westinghouse and an outside contractor. However, the impact of new information relative to NRC Staff expectations with respect to reactor vessel IA g material calculations provided during a November 12,1997 meeting with NEl and industry representatives must be evaluated with respect to our response to the request for additionalinformation.

The delay in the submittal of our response to the request for additional information was discussed with the NRC Project Manager for Prairie Island on November 13,1997.

For the inforrnation of the NRC Staff, new information provided by the NRC Staff during the November 12,1997 meeting has also resulted in a delay to a pending License Amendment Request updating the Prairie Island reactor vessel pressure / temperature limitations.

In this lever we have made no new Nuclear Regulatory Commission commitments.

Please contact Gene Eckholt (612-388-1121) if you 5 ave any questions related to this response.
