15

16 Identify and supply all documents, including but not limited to 17 reports, analyses, meeting summaries, memorandums, and portions thereof, 18 relied upon to evaluate the alternatives to high density re-racking of the 19 spent fuel pools at Diablo Canyon nuclear plant.

20 21 RESPONSE TO INTERROGATORY NO. 1:

22 23 PGandE's evaluation of alternatives was based on an understanding of i

24 the existing industry practice and, in general, the currently available 25 technology for the storage of spent fuel. This understanding was derived from 26 a review of the existing literature on reracking amendments submitted by other 8610080258 861003 PDR ADOCK 05000275

1 utilities which had been previously filed with and issued by the NRC, generic 2 research documentation generated by the federal government pursuant to the l 3 Nuclear Maste Policy Act of 1982, and other industry sources discussing spent 4 fuel storage alternatives. These sources also included periodicals of the 5 nuclear industry, technical reports issued by the NRC, and other documents 6 related to storage of spent fuel. While these sources provided a general 7 understanding of the available alternatives, PGandE performed a specific 8 review of alternatives for Diablo Canyon. Since the evaluation was performed 9 with this basic understanding, it was deemed not necessary to document each -

10 aspect of the evaluation; therefore, it is not possible to either identify or 11 supply all of the reference documentation. However, specific documents that 12 are available and which are directly related to the evaluation of alternatives 13 at Diablo Canyon are listed on page 4 and attached to this response.

14 15 16 INTERROGATORY NO. 2:

17 18 Identify and supply all information and documents relied upon to 19 evaluate dry cask on-site storage as an alternativo to high density

! 20 re-racking.
