The information is as initially received 'without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the ADSP staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

P0TENTIAL TAMPERING WITH SPARE AUXILIARY FEEDWATER PUMP MOTOR On August 10, 1989, the applicant informed the Resident Inspector. Operations, 3 cf an. apparent tampering incident with a spare auxiliary feedwater pump. The '

pump originally had been installed in Unit 2. It was removed several months ago during the hot functional test program and sent to the Maintenance shop to prepare it for use in Unit 1. Maintenance personnel inspected and verified that its condition including both bearing oil sumps was satisfactory. The re - .

Unit I hot functional test was completed without requiring its use. On ii August 10, 1989, just prior to sending it to the warehouse, the applicant  !

inspected it to verify its condition for storage. A 9-inch piece of wire and metal shavings were discovered in the inboard pump bearing oil sump.

, .Also, metal shavings were discovered in the outboard pump bearing oil sump.

The applicant is conducting an investigation of this incident.

The NRC does not plan"to issue a news release.

The State of Texas will be informed.

The Comanche Peak Project Division received initial notification of this occurrence by telephone call from the applicant on August 10, 1989. The information presented herein has been discussed with the applicant and is current as of 8:00 a.m. (CST) on August 11, 1989.
