POTENTIAL TAMPERING WTTH SPARE AUXILIARY FEEDWATER PUMP MOTOR (UPDATE)

On August 18, 1989, the applicant informed the NRC site office that their investigation revealed that no tampering was evident. The foreign material.

that had been reported as being found in the pump bearing oil sump was actually in the water jacket for the pump. The water jacket is not used in this application at Comanche Peak and, although located in the same casting as the oil sump, it is segregated by a wall. The water jacket had never been inspected or cleaned acid the foreign :<.aterial appears to be from the initial manufacture of the pump.

The NRC_does not plan to issue a news release.

The State of Texas will be informed.

The Comanche Peak Project Division received initial notification of this occurrence by telephone from the applicant on August 18, 1989. The information presented herein has been discussed with the licensee and is esi ent as of 8:00 a.m. (CST) on August 21, 1989.
