SUM ARY OF AUGUST 17, 1988 MEETING

 ,                   On August 17. 1988, representatives of Gulf States Utilities (GSU) met with j                     members of the NRC staff in Rockville, Maryland to discuss GSU's Five Year Business Plan. A list of attendees is enclosed (Enclosure 1).

The Five-Year Plan delineates goals set by GSU for each year over the next five years to improve safety and to reduce operating costs at River Bend .. Station. GSU representatives stated that the potential threat of backruptcy  ! has been averted because of rate increases received from Louisiana and Texas.  ! It was also emphasized that sufficient funds are available to support continued safe operation of River Bend Station and that there will be no compromise on ' safety. 1 The major goals discussed were: (1) reduction in centractor employees and , concurrent increase in permanent GSU plant staff to achieve savings in operating costs;(2)improvementinregulatoryperformanceincluding)improvedratingsin the NRC systematic appraisal of licensee performance (SALP ; and (3) an evalua-tion of a potential license amendment to increase the authorized power level by 5 percent. 4 Plant perfonnance was also discussed by GSU representati'fes.
