SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF OCTOBER 7, 1987 MEETING WITH MARK III CONTAINMENT HYDR 0 GEN CONTROL OWNERS GROUP (HCOG) REGARDING HCOG SUBMITTALS

'The meeting was held to discuss HC0G submittals concerning methods for calculating equipment temperature based on quarter scale test data and the impact of station blackout considerations on HCOG programs. Attendees are listed in Enclosure 1. l t

The staff questioned several areas in the methods for calculating heat transfer j from the plume and flame to containment walls and equipment. Areas discussed j were: the neglect of radiation from the plume, assumptions regarding origin j of the plum, neglect of radiation from the flame to the suppression pool, gas '

transmittance values sssumed, use of current convection heat transfer correla-tions, values of gas emissivity, and view factors in radiation calculations, j HC0G representatives responded to staff's questions and will provide a written )

response, based on the discussions. l The staff also questioned the applicability of the Clasix Code in the computation of equipment temperatures, because only average temperatures in the containment are computed. The quarter scale test data showed local temperatures significantly higher than the average temperature, particularly in chimmey regions for low hydrogen flow rates. The staff suggested that expected high local temperature regions in each specific plant based on test data should be examined to see if equipment including cable required to survive the hydrogen combustion is located near those regions. The HCOG representatives responded that criteria would have to be developed by the NRC prior to such an examination. HCOG will summarize its treatment of the low hydrogen flow region in a letter.

HCOG September provided 9, 1987additional submittal resp (onsesHCOG HGN-123). to staff's question provided regarding references the to previous HC0G meetings wherein the BWR Heatup Code was.shown to be adequate to predict hydrogen generation for recoverable degraded core accidents. HCOG stated that 8711050218 871030 PDR ADOCK 05000416 '
