REGISTRY OF' RADIOACTIVE / SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETYLEVALUATION OF SEALED SOURCE NO.: NR-300-S-865hSI DATE: . 0CT 21 1993 PAGE 2 OF 5 SEALED SOURCE TYPE: Radiography Source. Assembly DESCRIPTION:

The-Model R' series source assembly is designed for use in Radionics Exposure Devices,.as shown in the attached pigtail selection chart (Limitations and/or'Other Considerations of Use section). The third character in the. source model designation indicates the type of connector. The "R" indicates the

" Radionics" Anr "T-Bar"' style connector, whereas the "G" indicates-

'the short'(old) Gamma Industries Saf-T-Key and the "A" indicates the long (new) Gamma Industries Saf-T-Key connector.

For several years, Gamma Industries has, on request of customer, modified.the lock box on original Radionics equipment to prevent the source-from being pulled out to an-unsafe position (or even

' completely.out of.the device) when making the connection to a drive-cable. The modification is accomplished by fastening, into the lockbox, a 3/4" (1.91 cm) stainless steel insert with a hole of smaller diameter than the locking ball but larger than the cable and connector. This effectively prevents the source from

' coming out of.the rear of the device, and the device may.be then designated as'" modified," e.g., Radionics Model P192-100U.

-(Modified). Until recently, no provision was made to indicate that any such device has been so modified, but now, a tag.is permanently attached to.the device, indicating that it has been modified and specifying the Gamma Industries source model number to be'used.

The Iridium sourco capsule is singly encapsulated (doubly encapsulated for Co-60 where possible) in Type 304 or 316 stainless steel. The seal _ weld may be performed by using an end cap weld lor side circumferential weld method, either.of which is accomplished by a heliarc (TIG) welding technique. Capsule wall thickness is maintained at a minimum of 0.030" (0.76 mm). The Lconnector and capsule are crimped to 1/8" (3.18 mm) diameter stainless steel cable with 5/16" (7.93 mm) x 5/16" (7.93 mm) l ~ locking ball. .-Overall pigtail dimensional tolerances are held to L ~ i1/16" ( 1.59 mm).

QUALITYDASSURANCE AND CONTROL:

Each-" pigtail" assembly is subjected to a 100.lb. (45.36 kg) pull

. test prior to radioactive source insertion and is subjected to a

. contamination wipe test after the material is sealed in the capsule. .Iffthe wipe test indicates contamination, then~a hot  :

water-bubble test will be performed. If the bubble test is Epositive, the capsule will be disposed of or reworked, as zappropriate. i l

SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

1The Model *R" Series source is no longer manufactured or l

' distributed'by Gamma Industries, Inc. and Gamma Industries, Inc. l Dis no longer l'n' business. Therefore, the registration certificate is being converted to an inactive registration certificate.

The. source was originally approved for licensing purposes by the Louisiana Division-of Radiation Control. NRC attempted to obtain copies of all-information submitted by the registrant'in support of the evaluation. However, NRC could not locate all the information. Therefore, no safety. evaluation of the source was performed as part of the conversion of the certificate to

, inactive status.
