in Ooeratina Reactors. Unresolved issue (USI) A-46 On February 19,1987, the NRC issued Generic Letter 87-02, " Verification of Seismic 1 Adequacy of Mechanical and Electrical Equipment in Operating Reactors, Unresolved issue (USI) A-46". This Generic Letter encouraged utilities to participate in a generic program to resolve verification issues associated with USI A-?6. As a result, the Seismic Qualification Utility Group (SQUG) developed the " Generic Implementation i Procedure (GIP) for Seismic Verification of Nuclear Plantt Equipment".

On May 22,1992, the NRC Staff issued Generic Letter 87-02, Supplement 1, which constituted the NRC Staffs review of the GIP and which included Supplemental Safety Evaluation Report Number 2 (SSER-2) on the GIP, Revision 2, corrected on February 14,1992. The NRC letter to SQUG enclosing SSER-2 requests that SQUG members  ;

provide to the NRC a schedule for implementing the GIP. Via letter dated September  !

21,1992, we notified the Staff that we would implement the GIP and would provide a l Summary Report as outlined by the GlP by November 20,1995. This Summary Report is attached to this letter. The Summary Report is in two parts:

As a result of our implementation of the GIP for Prairie Island, outliers were identified, as discussed in the Summary Report. We commit to resolving all of the outliers, we do ]

not intend to leave any outliers unresolved. We will evaluate resolution options '

available and we ccmmit to submitting to the NRC our schedule for accomplishing all resolutions within 90 days of the end of our Unit 1 refueling outage scheduled to start in January 1996.

Charging pump speed controlis also an issue requiring resolution. it is discussed in

. Section 3.2.3 of the "SSEL and Relay Evaluation Report" portion of the Summary Report rather than in the lists of outliers elsewhere in the report. Although speed -

control isn't listed in the report as a seismic outlier, it will be treated as an outlier until resolved; thus, we commit to resoluti 1 of the concern. Resolution may be different -

than that outlined in the discussion of Section 3.2.3.

Regarding the future use of GlP for Prairie Island, we may use the GIP methodology to verify the seismic adequacy of any new or replacement equipment or parts.
