Date Operator 5:e=uption of High Pressure Injection February 16, 1978 ln . . . . . . , . . . .. ,.

In reviev of =y earlie: =e=o on this subject, dated February 9, 1973, 71 eld *

Se:vice has recon =anded tha follovd.ug procedure for te==ina:1=g high pressure i=jec:Lon following a.LOCA.

1. Lov pressure injee:1on has been actuated and is floving at a race in ex-cess of the high pressure injection capability and that'si:ussion has been stable for a period of time (10 minucas). Same as previously stated. ,.
2. At X =1= uter following the initiation of high pressure injection, tar- -

tion is allowed pr vided the hoc lag ta=perature i= dica:1on plus appropri-

' a:e ins :umes: a=or is more than 50*y belov :he satura: ion ta=,,e:ature conespcudi=g to the reactor coolant systa= pressure less ins: u=ent enor.

I is a time lag to prevent the termination of the high pressure injection famediately followi=g its initia:1on. It requires fur her work to define its specific value, but it is probable that 10 ad utes will be adequate.

The need for the delay is that no =al operati=g condi:fons are vi:hin the abeve criteria and thus it is conceivable tha: the high p; essure in-jection would be te==i=ated duri=g the dad-d=1 phase of a s=all LCCA.

I find that this scheme is acceptable from the standpoin: of proventing ad-verse long range proble=s a:d is easier to imple=ent. Therefore, I wish to modify the procedure requested in my first memo to the one ide=tified here.
