+' '7 METROPOLITAN EDISON COMPANY seoso, a c,, a roonc uu..., cm - i.e, Subject Condensate Polisher Valve P.alfunction location TMI Date July 13, 1979 To J.R.
Floyd On July 5,1979 Bill Sawyer, under Donald A. Eerry's supervisien,
attempted to place #8 polisher in service and remove #6 polisher.
The recorder for #8 polisher would not give an indication.
Jim Harsh,
Unit II Instrument Tech, found water in the air supply-to the recorder.
He replaced it with another recorder.
Curt Conrad relieved Bill Savyer
, ~
and finished putting #8 in service.
As soon as it was on line, the air supply to the #8 outlet valve started to flutter and we went over to the outlet valve itself.
We found the outlet valve starting to close and open in an increasing amplitude.
Within 10 seconds it slammed shut.
I opened the #6 polisher outlet valve and returned it to service.
It should be noted that we have the manual bypass valve around the polisher system partially opened so that the pu ps would not trip if this happened.
Jim Earah opened the air supply line to the #3 polisher outlet valve and blev out abcut h to 1 cup of water.
After the water was removed, the polisher wc.s again placed in service and it functicned satisfacterily.
The water Got into the air line when CPU attempted to simulate the March 28th trip about a week earlier.
They were not successful because the water never got over to the valve itself.
It took a while for the water to work itself over to the valve and when we attempted to cha*1ce polishers we in fact duplicated the trip.
