Based on previous conversations with him and with you, I believe that the following information should be satisfactory.

"It is my belief that actions are appropriate to further emphasize the attention being given to safety issues within the Nuclear Power Generation Division. Therefore, effective 1979,

'an independent safety review group is being formeo under. the chairmanship of Mr. J. F. Mallay. The function of the safety .

(vA,, review group is to review, with a broad perspective, the manner in which safety problems and issues are being handled within NPGD and to recommend to me corrective actions for strer:gthening those activities indicating the need for upgrade. In order to provide a broad perspective, the other members of the safety review group '

will be E. A. Womack, N. S. Elliott, D. W. Montgomery, E. V. DeCarli .

and J. H. Taylor. It is expected that they will requiie the assistance of other personnel periodically to carry out their function. ~

The safety review group's initial activity will include an

the responsibility definition and procedures for handling safety matters the resolution timeliness and priorities assigned to safety matters the need for greater upper management involvement in safety matters '

the general employee awareness of an attitude regarding safety matters G the breadth of evaluations involving safety matters 46.30
