Subject:

NPDES Permit MI0005827

Dear Messrs. Morley and Leep:

As required by Part ll.A.2 of the Cook Nuclear Plant National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit No. MI0005827, we are providing notification of a periodic chemical addition which will affect Outfall 00D, Turbine Room Sump.

Betz Depositrol 855D will be used to clean the Plant Heater Drain Sump Pumps. Cleaning is required due to calcium carbonate scale which builds up in the pump casings and associated piping. The associated sumps discharge to the plant Turbine Room Sump, and are neutralized if necessary before being discharged via Outfall 00D.

A similar notification was made on January 15, 1995, to use Betz Depositrol 855D to clean calcium carbonate deposits from the Heater Drain Sump Pumps, which are failing at a high rate due to a calcium carbonate buildup on the casing and impellers. The January 15, 1995 notification contained a plan to add Depositrol 855D on a monthly schedule to the sumps. Due to persistent pump failures, we have found it necessary to increase the addition fro'm monthly to daily.

Betz Depositrol 855D will be added to each of two separate sumps on an as needed basis (approximately daily.) We estimate that up to one gallon of 855D will to be added to each sump per treatment. The total estimated volume of Depositrol 855D used per year is approximately 365 gallons.

The deposits removed by this operation, consisting mainly of sodium chloride, sodium carbonate, and calcium carbonate, will be discharged via Outfall 00D. A dilution flow of approximately 250 gallons per minute will be achieved.
