AttachmenttoAEP:NRC:C0599-01Page6EphasewhenthewaterrequiredbytheECCSandtheCTSisobtainedfromtherecirculationsump.Thesumpdesignprovidessufficientflowareaoverthetrashcurbaheadofthesumpandadequatenetpositivesuctionheadfortheresidualheatxemoval(RHR)andCTSpumpstooperateintherecirculationmode.Waterflowingintothesumppassesthroughthecoarseandfinescreensanddownwardsunderthecranewall.TheflowisthenturnedupwardsandentersthetwinrecirculationpipesconnectingthesumptotheRHRandCTS.Theadjacentcontainmentsumpisalsoequippedwithcoarseandfinescreensatitsentrance.Thecontainmentandtherecirculationsumpsareconnectedviaan8-inchpipenearthebottomofthesumps.Therecirculationsumpisprotectedattheentrybycoarseandfinescreenssupportedwithinasubstantialframe.Thecoarsescreen(grating)isinstalledinfrontofthesumptopreventlargematerialsfrompassingandthefine(1/4-inchmesh)screenisintendedtostopmaterialcapableofpluggingthe3/8-inchcontainmentspraynozzles.Additionally,thecontainmentsumpentranceisalsoprotectedwithacoarsescreenand1/4inchwiremeshinasimilarmanner.Fortherecirculationsump,thescreensactasflowstraightenersandmitigatevortexformationbyequalizinglocalvelocitydifferences.Additionally,thesumpisdesignedwitharelativelylargeflowarea,allowinglowwatervelocities,suchthatbuild-upofdebrisagainstthescreensisminimized.Thelowvelocitiesmakeitunlikelythatairbubblesenterintothepumpsuctionareaofthesump.AsnotedintheNRCsSafetyEevaluationReport(SER)datedJuly2,1982thecontainmentrecirculationsumpdesignmeetstheintentoftheapplicablesectionsofRegulatoryGuides1.68,1.79,and1.82,Revision0.InconformancewithRegulatoryGuide1.82,Revision0positionC.7,50$oftheeffectivesumpareawasconsideredtobeblockedbyLOCAgenerateddebris.Atthetimethattheplantwaslicensed,nodistinctionwasdrawnbetweenthevariouspotentialsourcesofpost-LOCAdebris;thesesystemswereintendedtofunctionwithdebrisfromanysourcepartiallyobstructingthesumpsand50%blockagewasconsideredtobeaconservativeestimateofpotentialsumpblockage.Theanalysesandmodeltestingresultssubmittedaspartofthelicensi'ngbasisfortheplantdemonstrate,that,evenwith50%ofeffectivesumpareablockage,theECCSandCTSwillcontinuetoprovidesufficientcoolingflowtofulfillthelong-termcoolingfunctionsrequiredtoconformwith10CFR50.46(b)(5).Thecontainmentrecirculationsumpdesignwasmodel-testedattheAldenResearchLaboratoriesinthelate1970stoevaluateairentrainmentandvortexingconcerns.Thesetestsdeterminedthatthemodifications,asprescribedbya1978Aldenstudy,wouldbe.effectiveinassuringacceptablesumpperformance.Additionally,empiricaldatafordeterminingtheheadlossatthesumpentrancewereobtainedforsumpblockagesupto50%ofthescreenarea. AttachmenttoAEP:NRC:C0599-01Page6EphasewhenthewaterrequiredbytheECCSandtheCTSisobtainedfromtherecirculationsump.Thesumpdesignprovidessufficientflowareaoverthetrashcurbaheadofthesumpandadequatenetpositivesuctionheadfortheresidualheatxemoval(RHR)andCTSpumpstooperateintherecirculationmode.Waterflowingintothesumppassesthroughthecoarseandfinescreensanddownwardsunderthecranewall.TheflowisthenturnedupwardsandentersthetwinrecirculationpipesconnectingthesumptotheRHRandCTS.Theadjacentcontainmentsumpisalsoequippedwithcoarseandfinescreensatitsentrance.Thecontainmentandtherecirculationsumpsareconnectedviaan8-inchpipenearthebottomofthesumps.Therecirculationsumpisprotectedattheentrybycoarseandfinescreenssupportedwithinasubstantialframe.Thecoarsescreen(grating)isinstalledinfrontofthesumptopreventlargematerialsfrompassingandthefine(1/4-inchmesh)screenisintendedtostopmaterialcapableofpluggingthe3/8-inchcontainmentspraynozzles.Additionally,thecontainmentsumpentranceisalsoprotectedwithacoarsescreenand1/4inchwiremeshinasimilarmanner.Fortherecirculationsump,thescreensactasflowstraightenersandmitigatevortexformationbyequalizinglocalvelocitydifferences.Additionally,thesumpisdesignedwitharelativelylargeflowarea,allowinglowwatervelocities,suchthatbuild-upofdebrisagainstthescreensisminimized.Thelowvelocitiesmakeitunlikelythatairbubblesenterintothepumpsuctionareaofthesump.AsnotedintheNRCsSafetyEevaluationReport(SER)datedJuly2,1982thecontainmentrecirculationsumpdesignmeetstheintentoftheapplicablesectionsofRegulatoryGuides1.68,1.79,and1.82,Revision0.InconformancewithRegulatoryGuide1.82,Revision0positionC.7,50$oftheeffectivesumpareawasconsideredtobeblockedbyLOCAgenerateddebris.Atthetimethattheplantwaslicensed,nodistinctionwasdrawnbetweenthevariouspotentialsourcesofpost-LOCAdebris;thesesystemswereintendedtofunctionwithdebrisfromanysourcepartiallyobstructingthesumpsand50%blockagewasconsideredtobeaconservativeestimateofpotentialsumpblockage.Theanalysesandmodeltestingresultssubmittedaspartofthelicensi'ngbasisfortheplantdemonstrate,that,evenwith50%ofeffectivesumpareablockage,theECCSandCTSwillcontinuetoprovidesufficientcoolingflowtofulfillthelong-termcoolingfunctionsrequiredtoconformwith10CFR50.46(b)(5).Thecontainmentrecirculationsumpdesignwasmodel-testedattheAldenResearchLaboratoriesinthelate1970stoevaluateairentrainmentandvortexingconcerns.Thesetestsdeterminedthatthemodifications,asprescribedbya1978Aldenstudy,wouldbe.effectiveinassuringacceptablesumpperformance.Additionally,empiricaldatafordeterminingtheheadlossatthesumpentrancewereobtainedforsumpblockagesupto50%ofthescreenarea.
