Specifically, fortheservicewaterpumps,thebearingsaresubmersed inuptofortyfeetofwatermakingbearingtemperatures closelyapproximate thesurrounding watertemperature andmeasurement oftemperatures almostimpossible.

Fortheauxiliary andstandbyauxiliary feedwater pumpsthetestconditions requirethedischarge ofambienttemperature waterintothe400degreeFfeedwater lines.Sinceitcantypically takeinexcessofanhourtostabilize bearingtemperatures thiscausesanunnecessary extendedtemperature trans-ientinthefeedwater line.Fortheresidualheatremovalandsafetyinjection pumpsthesystemconfigurations donotallowtestingthepumpsatactualpumpserviceconditions duringplantoperation.

Instead,thetestsmustbe I1I QUALITYA'SSURANCE MANUALGINNASTATIONTITLE:APPENDIXCPumpandValveTestingProgramDATEPAGE737Ofperformed atanoff-design flowcondition whichresultsinhigherbearingtemperatures thannormal.Thisistobeexpectedsincehigherthannormalthrustloadsareplacedonthepumpbearingsduringthisreducedflowtestcondition.

Theextendedtimerequiredforbearingtemperatures tostabilize subjectsthepumptolengthyperiodsofunnecessarily highloads.Thepumpvendorsdonotconsiderthemeasurement ofbearingtemperature inthistypeofoff-design condition tobeagoodindication ofbearingconditions.

Thevendorsrecommended bearingtemperature limitsarebasedonnormaloperating conditions anddonotapplytothistypeoftesting.Ingeneral,vibration isconsidered tobeabetterindication ofbearingcondition sinceasignificant increaseinbearingtemperature willnormallyonlyoccurifbearingfailureisimminent.

Finally,testconditions cannotbeeasilycontrolled toproducetemperature repeatability sincereadingsaresubjecttoalargenumberofvariables suchasambientairtemperature, coolingwatertemperature (whereapplicable),

Whencoldshutdowns areofashorterduration(2-3days),testpersonnel shallattempttotestasmanyvalvesaspossiblewithoutholdingupthestartupoftheunitwithtestingbeginning nolaterthan48hoursaftertheplantreachescoldshutdown(asdefinedinTechnical Specification 1.2).Forveryshortcoldshutdowns (lessthan48hours),itwouldbeimpossible tomobilizetestpersonnel toimplement thetestingprogramundertherequiredprocedural
