December 1, 2006 Ms. Tonya Appleyard Emergency Preparedness Office of Radiation Control State Department of Public Health 201 Monroe Street Montgomery, AL 36130-3017
Dear Ms. Appleyard:
On May 16, 2002 the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Board of Directors approved the restart of Unit 1. As part of its plans to restart, TVA initiated a program to ensure that Unit 1 is in full compliance with all applicable federal standards and regulations. All of these actions have been conducted under the oversight of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
TVA is required to obtain approval from the NRC to resume plant operations. As part of the regulatory review and approval process the NRC conducts periodic public meetings. During these meetings the public is invited to observe and will have one or more opportunities to communicate with the NRC after the business portion, but before the meeting is adjourned.
The meeting will take place in the vicinity of the facility to provide the opportunity for the general public to attend, as well as all of the elected and appointed local officials in the area.
The meeting is scheduled to be conducted on December 18, 2006 at 1:00 PM, at the Calhoun Community College. We are hereby inviting you and other representatives of your office to attend this meeting. Also, please feel free to encourage other government agencies, as well as the general public to attend this forum.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.390 of the NRC's "Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter and its enclosure will be available electronically for inspection in the NRC Public Document Room or from the Publicly Available Records (PARS) component of NRCs document system (ADAMS).
ADAMS is accessible from the NRC Web site at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html (the Public Electronic Reading Room).
