Theworkinvolvedmostlymechanical andelectrical installation withinthemainbuildings, earth-movingattheemergency centerandwestlandfillareas,andformsettingandconcretepouringoft;heUnit2coolingt;ower.Theworkforcewasabout23/lessthanlastyear.Thenumberofmachineoperators, electricians, ironworkers,pipefitters,carpenters, andlaborerswasabout3000onthedayshiftandapproximately 450ontheeveningshift.Littleornonoisyoutsideworkwasperformed ontheeveningandnightshifts.Hosteffortwasconcentrated int;heturbine-generator andreact;orbuildings asthepowersystemswerebeinginstalled andtested.Ten-wheel truckswereusedtohaulearthtothewestern

ReportNo.3024A-5BoltBeranekandNewmanInc.endofthesite.ThebatchplantproducedconcreteforCheUnit;2coolingtower.Plantroadsweregradedandpavedusingdozers,rollers,graders,pavingequipment andtrucks.Earthmovingattheemergency centerincludedCheuseofasheepsfootroller,adozer,ascraper,andtrucks.Xntheswitchyard someerectionandearthworkwasunderway.

Theworkforceof3450peoplerepresented abouta235reduction fromtheAugust1979levelof4500people.SoundlevelsmeasurednearChesite,locations 2-5,increased several.decibelsdueCoCheearthworkassociated withCheemergency center.Theweatherremainedstableduringthesitevisit;noprecipitation orhighwindswereobserved.

Theskiesweregenerally clearorpartlycloudy.Daytimetemperatures werebetween55Fand70oF.Atnightthetemperatures wereless,about45FCo50oF.ThewindspeedswerelessChan10mph.Themeasurement locations nearthesiteareillustrated inFig.1;thelocations foradditional ambientmeasurements moredistantfromChesiteareshowninFig.2.TheprogressofSSESconstruction isshowninFig.3,aphotograph takenon31July1980.TableIliststhemeasurement instruments employedduringthesitevisitandincludestheirrespective datesofcalibra-tion.Thefieldmeasurement andcalibration techniques weresimilartoChoseofpreviousvisits;theseprocedures aredescribed inBBNReport;3024.

Themediansoundpressurelevelspresented inFig.4forlocation2increased fromAugust1979toOctober1980.ThemedianA-weighted soundlevelwas53dB(A)forCheOctober1980measurements, comparedtotheAugust1979valueof48dB(A).Earthmoving equipment inthenearbyemergency centerareacausedthisincrease.

Figure5illustrates Chemediansoundpressurelevelsobtainedatlocation3.Construction soundswerebarelyaudibleherelastyearbecauseofthesoundattenuation providedbyanearbyridgeandbecausemostconstruction workwasindoors.Duringthistripthesoundlevelshadincreased dueCoworkatCheemergency center.

Sinceconstruction began,themeasuredmediansoundlevelshaverangedbetween42and47dB(A)atthislocation.

Asummaryofthemedianconstruction soundlevels-isgivenfortheabovelocations inTableII.Themeasurement teamvisitedlocation7severaltimesduringtheOctober1980trip.Thislocation, whichisapproxi-matelyonemiletothenorthwest ofthesite,iswellshieldedbyanintervening ridge.Noiseproducedbylocalfarmsourcesandbyearthmoving equipment onthewestsideoftheSSESsitewasaudibleatthislocation.
