INTRODUCTION This is the sixth in a series of progress report;s that present the results of const;ruction noise measurement;s made in the vicinity of the Susquehanna St;earn Electric Station (SSES) site. These measurements, obtained by Bolt Beranek and Newman Inc. (BBN) during the week of 6-10 October 1980, serve to update the acoustic description of the community near t;he site. Xn addit;ion, ambient sound level measurements were made at five locations more distant from the site. The five previous report;s summarize the ambient and construction noise measurements obtained in the years 1972 t'hrough 1979.

Construction activity continued on Units 1 and 2 and the common facilities during the October 1980 site visit. At that time, work was concentrated in the main power block, switchyard,'nit; 2 cooling tower, batch plant, and west; landfill areas.

Plant roads were being paved and earth work had started at the new emergency center near the west property line. The con-struction of Unit 1 was approximately 87$ complete, and that; of Unit; 2 was 60$ complete. The work involved mostly mechanical and electrical installation within the main buildings, earth-moving at the emergency center and west landfill areas, and form setting and concrete pouring of t;he Unit 2 cooling t;ower. The work force was about 23/ less than last year. The number of machine operators, electricians, iron workers, pipe fitters, carpenters, and laborers was about 3000 on the day shift and approximately 450 on the evening shift. Little or no noisy outside work was performed on the evening and night shifts.

Host effort was concentrated in t;he turbine-generator and react;or buildings as the power systems were being installed and tested. Ten-wheel trucks were used to haul earth to the western

end of the site. The batch plant produced concrete for Che Unit; 2 cooling tower. Plant roads were graded and paved using dozers, rollers, graders, paving equipment and trucks. Earth moving at the emergency center included Che use of a sheeps foot roller, a dozer, a scraper, and trucks. Xn the switchyard some erection and earth work was underway. The work force of 3450 people represented about a 235 reduction from the August 1979 level of 4500 people. Sound levels measured near Che site, locations 2-5, increased several. decibels due Co Che earth work associated with Che emergency center.

The weather remained stable during the site visit; no precipitation or high winds were observed. The skies were generally clear or partly cloudy. Daytime temperatures were between 55 F and 70oF. At night the temperatures were less, about 45 F Co 50oF. The wind speeds were less Chan 10 mph.

The measurement locations near the site are illustrated in Fig. 1; the locations for additional ambient measurements more distant from Che site are shown in Fig. 2. The progress of SSES construction is shown in Fig. 3, a photograph taken on 31 July 1980.

Table I lists the measurement instruments employed during the site visit and includes their respective dates of calibra-tion. The field measurement and calibration techniques were similar to Chose of previous visits; these procedures are described in BBN Report; 3024.

2. SOUND LEVEL MEASUREMENTS NEAR THE SSES SITE The median sound pressure levels observed at locations 2 Co 5 near Che site are illustrated in Figs. 4 through 7. These figures also compare these data with sound pressure levels obtained during previous years of site construction and pre-construction activity. Tabulations of Che sound pressure level statistical data obtained at these nearby locations and several locations within five miles of Che site appear in Appendix G.

Xt should be noted Chat Che data presented in Appendix G include local sound contributors, such as crickets and other insects, in addition Co Che distant sounds of traffic, aircraft, and SSES construction.

At locations 2 to 5 shown in Fig. 1, construction. sounds were generally audible. The construction sound sources included cranes, cherry pickers, trucks, dosers, loaders, scrapers, rollers, equipment backup alarms, the paging system, and hand Cool operations such as hammering.

The median sound pressure levels presented in Fig. 4 for location 2 increased from August 1979 to October 1980. The median A-weighted sound level was 53 dB(A) for Che October 1980 measurements, compared to the August 1979 value of 48 dB(A).

Earthmoving equipment in the nearby emergency center area caused this increase.

Figure 5 illustrates Che median sound pressure levels obtained at location 3. Construction sounds were barely audible here last year because of the sound attenuation provided by a nearby ridge and because most construction work was indoors.

During this trip the sound levels had increased due Co work at Che emergency center.

At location 4, near the south property line of the site in the Bell Bend Community, the median sound level was 47 dB(A).

This level is 2 dB greater than in August 1979. The sound level data for this location are presented in Fig. 6.

Figure 7 exhibits the sound level data for" location 5, a-position to the east across the Susquehanna River. The median sound level of 45 dB(A) was influenced by many community sounds, including birds and traffic on Rte. 11 and Rte. 239, in addition to the engines, backup alarms, and pages associated with the construction project;. Since construction began, the measured median sound levels have ranged between 42 and 47 dB(A) at this location. A summary of the median construction sound levels

is given for the above locations in Table II.

The measurement team visited location 7 several times during the October 1980 trip. This location, which is approxi-mately one mile to the northwest of the site, is well shielded by an intervening ridge. Noise produced by local farm sources and by earthmoving equipment on the west side of the SSES site was audible at this location.
