The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff has revised the schedule for its review of Westinghouse Electric Company, LLCs (WECs) license renewal application for its Columbia Fuel Fabrication Facility (CFFF) in Hopkins, South Carolina. The attached revised schedule reflects the NRCs decision to re-open and extend the public comment period for the draft environmental impact statement (EIS) for the license renewal of the CFFF. The draft EIS comment period was originally scheduled to close on September 20, 2021 Federal Register (86 FR 43276). After careful consideration of requests from external stakeholders to extend the draft EIS comment period, the NRC decided to re-open and extend the comment period for an additional 60 days. The draft EIS comment period closed on November 19, 2021 (86 FR 53694). | |||
The NRC staff now plans to publish the final EIS in April 2022, the safety evaluation report, and the licensing decision after the Record of Decision is published by early June 2022. The EIS schedule is based on the EIS process, as required by Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Part 51, Environmental Protection Regulations for Domestic Licensing and Related Regulatory Functions, and the status of the ongoing environmental review and Westinghouses Phase II Remedial Investigation (RI) Work Plan under the Consent Agreement with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. As stated in previous schedule letters, the execution of the RI Work Plan represents a risk to the EIS schedule. The NRC staff continues to encourage Westinghouse to keep the NRC staff informed of any changes to the RI activities and schedule. | The NRC staff now plans to publish the final EIS in April 2022, the safety evaluation report, and the licensing decision after the Record of Decision is published by early June 2022. SUBJECT:
WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC COMPANY, LLC - REVISED SCHEDULE FOR RENEWAL REVIEW OF MATERIALS LICENSE SNM -1107 (ENTERPRISE PROJECT IDENTIFIER L-2017-RNW-0016)
Dear Ms. Malek :
In accordance with Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Section 2.390, Public inspections, exemptions, requests for withholding, of the NRCs Agency Rules of Practice and Procedure, a copy of this communication will be available electronically for public inspection in the NRC Public Document Room, or from the NRCs ADAMS. ADAMS is accessible from the NRC Web site at: http://www.nrc.gov/readingrm/adams.html.
