2.3 Inadequate Slump (R)

Slump ( | == Description:==
Slump is a critical property to determine workability and the ease of flow of concrete into various forms of confined areas (such as in the rebar cage, between the sleeves and rebars, etc.). When the slump is too low, voids may form. High slump may be an indication of excess water and a higher w/c ratio than desired. Excess water can in turn impact the concrete strength properties, lead to shrinkage, and increase creep in the long term.
Data to be Collected and Analyzed:
(1) Review concrete pour cards for slump data. Some of the loads that failed to meet specifications were placed, but most of the loads that failed were rejected. (Exhibit 1 -Table summary of pour tickets for bay 12 and 15 and Exhibit 2 is a graph of the table data.)
(2) Examine if excessive voids exist through core sample and baroscopic examinations. (3) Review original strength records for variation. (Exhibit 3)

P e ýma F@1*[aMay identify additional perspective on this issue as RCA related efforts proceeds Verified Refuting Evidence:
: 1. Inspection/pour records indicate a large number of trucks were rejected due to inadequate slump indicating effective inspection.
: 2. Cores and-baroscopic investigation did not detect any significant voids or aggregate pockets. A few locations appear to be repaired or had replacement concrete applied as a result of correction of void problems (as reported in multiple NCRs)
Verified Supporting Evidence:
: 1. Concrete was placed with slump that exceed the value allowed by the slump spec of 4". Also, a number of loads with slump under 2" were reported as placed into the bays between the buttresses.
However, although dryer than what is normally considered workable, they were not out of spec.
: 2. Multiple records of voids and aggregate pockets that required remedial work were reviewed.
: 3. An interview with the Labor Forman for the concrete pours during initial construction (Willie Easman) revealed that several loads of concrete were "dumped in the yard because the slump was not right".
== Conclusions:== | |||
The supporting evidence reveals a problem in achieving and maintaining a workable concrete.
It appears that QA at the mixing plant allowed a number of trucks with out-of-spec concrete to be sent to the site. Many of these trucks were subsequently rejected, causing disruption of the process (especially when partial trucks were rejected). Also noted was a large number of trucks that exceeded the allowed mixing time and were rejected after a partial load.
Because of the number of mix-designs used (at least three were used in Bays 12 & 15) it is not possible to determine strength variation caused by slump and/or water content.
Review of strength records did not reveal a problem achieving the design strength that can be attributed to slump.

2.3 Inadequate Slump (R)
May identify additional perspective on this issue as PrDmnsinar RCA related efforts proceeds
Description:
(Exhibit 3)

2.3 Inadequate Slump, Cont.
P e ýma F@1*[aMay identify additional perspective on this issue as RCA related efforts proceeds Verified Refuting Evidence:
- 1. Inspection/pour records indicate a large number of trucks were rejected due to inadequate slump indicating effective inspection.
- 2. Cores and-baroscopic investigation did not detect any significant voids or aggregate pockets. A few locations appear to be repaired or had replacement concrete applied as a result of correction of void problems (as reported in multiple NCRs)
Verified Supporting Evidence:
- 1. Concrete was placed with slump that exceed the value allowed by the slump spec of 4". Also, a number of loads with slump under 2" were reported as placed into the bays between the buttresses.
However, although dryer than what is normally considered workable, they were not out of spec.
- 2. Multiple records of voids and aggregate pockets that required remedial work were reviewed.
- 3. An interview with the Labor Forman for the concrete pours during initial construction (Willie Easman) revealed that several loads of concrete were "dumped in the yard because the slump was not right".
