Clarifications related to the NRC Staff's EA for Crystal River
- John, Provided below is a summary of the quesons we discussed along with the responses we heard. Can you please 1) con"rm the summaries are correct, 2) edit any inaccuracies, and 3) add any missing informaon. Then email back the summary and I will add it to ADAMS so it can be referenced in the EA that NRC sta are pung together.
Clari"caon #1:
Is the CR site currently intaking water?
Response #1:
Yes; however, only during periodic permited liquid waste releases does Crystal River Unit 3 intakes water from the Gulf of Mexico. The water enters the plant through the raw water intake structure and "umes, providing sucon to RWP-6 (Raw Water Pump #6). Upon exing the pump, the water then exits the Auxiliary Building through a "ume to the raw water discharge point.

Clari"caon #2:
Is the site currently discharging water (i.e., one of permits indicates that there is a discharge point)?
Response #2:
Yes; however, only during periodic permited liquid waste releases does Crystal River Unit 3 discharge water to the Gulf of Mexico. The water that is provided to RWP-6 (Ras Water Pump #6) is subsequently returned, along with the permited liquid waste. The water exits the plant through the raw water discharge piping to the discharge canal at the permited discharge point.
Clari"caon #3:
Do current site acvies included removing structures from the water?
Response #3:
Currently, there is no acve removal of structures. Duke Energy (not the licensee) has contracted and received proper perming from the Army Corps and State of Florida to modify (cut a notch) in the vercal weir wall structure that minimized the Circulang Water pumps "ow impacts within the discharge canal. The notch will permit manatee to move freely within the canal and not get trapped if they swim behind it at high de and get stranded when the de recedes. Though no exact date has been established, the work is tentavely planned for Spring 2024.
Clari"caon #4:
Related to heat load reducon, when did the site cease discharging water?
Response #4:
The last thermal contribuon from discharge was greater than 9 year ago when the Spent Fuel Cooling system was converted ulizing mechanical chillers to transfer the heat load to the surrounding atmosphere.
